Help fund Leo's diabetic Alert dog, a life saving companion
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Jett McIntyre and I'm 12 and in the 5th grade. My schoolmate Leo has diabetes and I wanted to start a fundraiser for him so he can get a diabetic dog. He needs it and it will help him so much. Thank you.
Hi! This is Leo Magalsky, son of Daniel and Jenna Magalsky of Lindsay, MT. Leo was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes a little over a year ago. We are reaching out to all of you who love young people and know of the amazing way animals can work with us. Daniel and Jenna are planning on purchasing and having a Diabetic Alert Dog trained to detect highs and lows in Leo’s blood sugar.
A Diabetic Alert Dog would be with Leo and be his companion everywhere he goes---outside playing, school, or church. A Diabetic Alert Dog would be able to alert his parents, teachers or others interacting with Leo if he is having a high or low blood sugar episode. This would give them peace of mind knowing that they don’t have to depend on a monitor (that has fallen off in the past), so they can take action before it turns into an emergency. Getting a Diabetic Alert Dog now, while Leo is young, would give them a chance to grow up together.
High and low blood sugar levels release chemicals that humans cannot smell, but dogs, having many more smell receptors can. Just as dogs can be trained to detect bombs or drugs, a Diabetic Alert Dog can be trained to smell those chemicals in a diabetic person’s breath, saliva, or sweat. Having this type of dog will be perfect for Leo.
Purchasing a Diabetic Alert Dog is an expensive undertaking. Between purchasing the right puppy and the special training it will require they are expecting it to cost about $15,000.
Thank you so much for joining us in this wonderful adventure for Leo! Your support means so much to us.
