My name is Ethan Miller, and I’m an independent filmmaker currently directing La Massacre, a poetic political documentary about the lasting impact of the 1937 Ponce Massacre in Puerto Rico.
This project became deeply personal to me after conversations with my Puerto Rican partner, Isabella Zeferino, and their family, who introduced me to the emotional and political realities still affecting the island today. The more I researched Puerto Rico’s history and the suppression surrounding it, the more I realized how little most Americans truly know about what happened and continues to happen there.
In my many conversations and extensive research around Puerto Rico’s culture I've learned that the important history of the island is often erased or simplified by Americans despite generations of colonialism, political violence and cultural suppression. This film aims to preserve memory through art while giving space to Puerto Rican voices.
