Please Help this Family Fund their Final Moments Together.

Time is running out, donate today to Kerry Nolan’s Hospice Fund

Kerry is my ex-hubby, the father of my only child, and my closest and longest friend.  We met when we were teenagers, back in the 80’s, and bonded right away over our love of alternative music.  No heavy metal for us!  It’s hard to believe we’ve now known each other for well over half our lives.  We imagined we’d eventually be old curmudgeons, still reminiscing about those early San Francisco days.

Kerry is husband to a beautiful wife, Rachel, who has herself just lost her mother.   He is father to their son, Nicholas, who is only 8 years old, a critical age to lose your father.    We share a daughter, Savannah, and her baby girl, our only grandchild, Olive – just 20 months old and too young to hold on to memories of her Grandpa.  He is son to Eyzatia, who is coping with a parents worst nightmare, out living their own child.  And baby brother to Breonna, who has always been his protector and advocate.  But no amount of love can protect him from the course of this disease.  Believe me, we’ve tried.

Last year Kerry was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer.  One with little research and limited treatment options.  The diagnosis was a shock, of course, but especially because Kerry has always been the healthiest person I know. A health food and fitness fanatic!  I can think of no one more disciplined and committed to caring for his body.

Like a true Athlete, Kerry tackled the diagnosis with fearless determination, pushing his body and soul beyond limits.  He did endless research, tenaciously pursued and got accepted into multiple trials, explored every avenue of traditional treatment as well as alternative and holistic.  He’s put his body through hell.  There have been times I’ve wondered – will cancer kill him or will fighting cancer kill him?

Today, his journey has changed course.  He’s out of traditional treatment options.  His care team has informed him he’s outlived any prognosis they could provide. In other words, he’s on borrowed time.  Because he is the fighter we all know and love, he will continue to try to extend the time he has and ease his pain through naturopathic means.  But the focus shifts to planning his end of life experience.  How do you do that?  There’s no course to study, no playbook to follow.  It’s just not something you expect to be doing when you’re barely into your 50s.

Kerry has a simple vision for his End of Life Experience.

First Priority:  Kerry would like to continue his naturopathic treatments as he believes they will extend his life and make the time he has left more comfortable.  Unfortunately, these treatments aren't covered by insurance because they aren't an approved method for cancer treatment.  Each treatment can cost over $300 and he needs to have them several times a week.   By contributing to this fund, you are helping to pay for these treatments which are helping Kerry feel better and are hopefully extending the time he has left to be with his family.

Second Priority:  Kerry would like to take a trip to Stinson beach in California, a sleepy town outside of Mill Valley where he grew up.  This is home for him.  He’d like some of his last days to be filled with ocean air, childhood memories, quiet  moments with family, and peaceful connection with the many visitors I’m sure he’ll have.

When the moment comes that you have to plan the end of your life, you hope that money won’t be a factor in your final experience.  Kerry’s wish is a simple experience.  Continuing care through naturapathic treatment and a trip to the beach to share quality time with family and friends.  Yet today, this is entirely impossible.  Medical bills have consumed every dollar of their savings, with outstanding balances still well into the 6 figures.  Those bills will live on, long beyond Kerry.

Help us make this dying man’s end of life everything he envisions.  Help make this family’s final moments together worry free, filled with peace and connection.  Help them through this moment as they say goodbye to this husband, father, and grandfather.

If you can’t donate, please forward his story to others.  Use social media to spread the word!

If you’d prefer to donate directly, you can VENMO me @jazzyjpurdy or mail a check made out to Kerry Nolan at 2646 NW Pettygrove St, Portland Oregon 97210.    I’m able to record direct donations on this campaign page.

Let’s help Kerry continue his naturopathic care and get him home, to his ocean air, childhood memories, shared with family and friends.  Help us make his simple dying wish come true, and help his family with the financial constraints of this transition so they can focus on what matters;  time together, peacefulness and goodbyes.
