Help Fund Kelly's Recovery

Donation protected
Let me paint a picture for you. The day is Saturday, September 26, 2020. It was our Mom, Kelly’s, weekend to be with our grandmother.  For those of you that don’t know, our aunts and uncle have been rotating weekends to watch our now disabled grandma, since she had her stroke a few years ago. My sister, who lives in Arizona, was coming home that weekend, but the big surprise was that our mom and grandma were under the impression she would be flying in on Sunday evening. I came over that Saturday morning under the guise that I had work to do (which I really did) but that I wanted to help and visit with my grandma. Little did they know, there was another surprise in store. At 8:21 PM my sister and her two amazing kids walked in the doorway to surprise our mom and grandma a day earlier than expected (video provided). It was the best! Our hearts were so full.

We had known our mom wasn’t feeling very well. She had not had a bowl movement in seven days and her stomach was very bloated. Everyone, please take note that if you have not had one in that time period, it is imperative you seek medical attention. So, the following day, Sunday, September 27, 2020, we decided to take our mom to the “doc in the box”, or what we call urgent care. They advised we go to the ER. And we did. There, our mom had a CT scan that revealed a mass in her colon. That following Tuesday, she had emergency surgery to remove the mass that had closed her colon to the size of a pin-hole. They were able to get everything in the surgery, her numbers came back great. But because they were not able to do the procedure laparoscopically, they had to open her up fully. She stayed in the hospital for seven days following surgery then an additional two weeks in a rehab facility. Since then, she has been released and diagnosed with Stage IIA Colon Cancer.

Her recovery is similar to her two previous c-sections, but a little more on the intense side. She required a wound-vac and some physical therapy. While we still have some additional testing, we were told she does not, at this time, require chemotherapy.

We are reaching out to ask for some help. Prior to surgery, my mom had just begun working fulltime again. Meaning she falls outside of paid FMLA leave. We are seeking some assistance to cover her housing, living expenses, medical supplies, current medical bills, and future ostomy reversal surgery expenses.

We appreciate any and all help. As some of you may know, I went back to school last year to pursue a degree in law and my sister has a young family. While we are doing our best to stay afloat, cancer is not cheap and we could use all the help we can get to ensure our mom’s recovery is as stress-free as possible and that she has a home to stay in during her recovery process and subsequent leave from work.

Thank you! Also, go get your colonoscopies if you have been putting that off.

Love,

Mardee and MaryKate
