Help Fund Hands-On History Projects at Groves High

Donation protected
My name is Rebecca Saavedra, and I teach 9th-grade World History at Groves High School in Savannah, Georgia. I’m reaching out to seek your support in funding History STEM projects for my students, as recent budget cuts have left us without the resources needed to continue these impactful activities.

Why History STEM Projects Matter

These projects are more than just classroom activities—they are gateways to future opportunities for my students. Here’s how they make a difference:

Career Exploration: Many of my students rarely encounter careers like architecture, interior design, or preservation. Through these projects, they get hands-on experience in these fields and begin to see new possibilities for their futures.

Tactile Learning and Problem-Solving: Whether they’re designing an aqueduct or creating a children’s book, students engage in real-world problem-solving, learning through both success and failure.

Fun and Engaging: These activities transform history lessons into memorable experiences that combine creativity, critical thinking, and teamwork.

Our Past STEM Projects
Here are some of the exciting projects we’ve completed in class:

Urban Planning Challenge: Students designed a Roman-inspired aqueduct to help transport water to a drought-stricken city.

Environmental Preservationists: Students recreated chinampas, the floating gardens of Mexico City, as models to understand ancient agricultural techniques.

Renaissance Children's Books: Students partnered with “Random House Publishing” to create engaging books that teach younger readers about the Renaissance.

Gold Rush Simulation: Students constructed and tested sluice boxes to learn how gold was separated during historical gold rushes.

Supplies Needed
To bring these projects to life, I need to purchase the following materials:

Building Supplies: Popsicle sticks, cardstock paper, popsicle cutters, toothpicks, skewer sticks, Styrofoam circles, corks, foil, foil trays, rubber bands, construction paper, straws, mesh. felt squares, and moss.

Adhesives and Tools: Hot glue guns, glue sticks (bulk), masking tape, duct tape, and regular glue, wood glue.

Other Materials: Dixie cups, marbles, artificial flowers, and plastic ziplock bags.

Your contribution will directly fund these materials and allow my students to continue engaging in these hands-on, immersive learning experiences. My goal is to raise $300, and every donation—big or small—will make a difference in the lives of my students.
