Help Fund Firewater - A Nickel Flour Production

A prophecy that foretells the end of the world? Don’t they all?

Firewater, a new play by Samantha Marchant, is a re-imagining of the Prometheus myth told from the point of view of fire and her sister. We meet a family living in another time and another place, in a world abandoned by the Gods. The Gods took with them their knowledge of fire, halting the progress of civilization. But this family holds a secret. A spark of divine fire burns within the younger sister. A prophecy foretells the wrath to come if fire ever returned to all of mankind. The family does what it can to hide her, fire, but do they act to protect her or themselves?

A mix of family drama and myth, Firewater is a full-length play exploring the ideas of faith, fate, family and finding the power within. After several readings, a production of Firewater will be presented in March of 2022 at Rochester’s own MuCCC.

We need your help to return fire to humanity!

What the funds will be used for:

Firewater has received several developmental readings and workshops, including readings at Skeleton Rep(resents) (2021), the College at Charleston (2021), and Queen City Playwrights (2020), as well as a workshop at The Inkwell Theater (2021). After a year of intense workshopping, Firewater is ready for the next step in its development: a staged production!

We need your help to see Firewater truly come to life. A minimum of $2,000 will make it possible. Here's what we need:

  • $1,325 for space to rehearse and perform: Our biggest expense is rehearsal and staging space. It will cost $500 to rent rehearsal space, as well as an additional $825 for our theater rental at MuCCC.
  • Costumes: What is a play without costumes? With $2,000 raised, we will be able to provide a small budget for decking our actors out in the most glamorous costumes Rochester vintage stores can provide.
  • Sets and Props: No play is complete without things on stage for the actors to play with! Our small budget will provide enough funds to create an unforgettable atmosphere and help bring the world of Firewater to life.

While the $2,000 we aim to raise will cover the bare essentials of creating a staged theater production, a larger budget means we can do far more! Here is what we could accomplish with better funding:

  • At $3,000 we will have a proper budget for marketing our show, printing programs, and providing concessions at the show itself. We will also have more money to spend on better sets and costumes.
  • At $5,000 we can provide a stipend to the creative team that makes this show happen - actors, designers, crew, etc.
  • At $7,000 we can hire an ASL interpreter to provide ASL interpretation at a performance of Firewater.

Who We Are:

Nickel Flour, the brain child of playwright Samantha Marchant and artist Drea Bim, was created to provide a home for the weird and wonderful artists that make up the DIY art scenes of Western New York. Joining them is Kendal Hooper, a budding young producer new to the Rochester arts world.

Nickel Flour’s first production was 1st Impressions, three shorts told in branching story-telling structure at the Rochester Fringe Festival.

Now, help us bring our next full length show onto the stage :)

In addition to staging Firewater, this production will be a continuation of Nickel Flour’s work to build our home in Rochester. Theater is communal, and the past two years have been isolating. Audience is the final ingredient needed to bring theater to life, and we invite you to be a part of our show and our community.
