UPDATE March 2023
In addition to specialist physio treatment we have recently found out about procedure called SPML which could significantly improve quality of her life. It is a surgical procedure that is carried under general anesthesia where the surgeon through pin holes on the skin lengthens the affected muscles. It requires no hospital stay and the patient returns quickly back in therapy and resumes quickly his/her everyday activities. In addition to the above, they also do a Perineural injection of Ethanol ("Alcohol block"), can enhance the SPML effect in selected patients with increased tone. After the Alcohol Block each leg can be moved independently without cross reaction. This allows for voluntary muscle control (the child can move each leg without scissoring). We are in touch with the surgeon in Greece and he confirmed that Emily would benefit from this procedure and he could not only operate her legs but also her right hand which is also very tight and she uses it sporadically. The cost of this surgery is around £16.5k. We would like to do this operation before Emily reaches school age to make her life easier when she starts the school.
Any contribution would be greatly welcomed, thank you all so much for your continued love and support. We really appreciate it.
Love, The Langheim Family
We are fundraising to help pay for Emily Langheim’s specialist physio treatment at the Adeli Medical Centre in Slovakia which specialises in intensive neuro physio rehabilitation.
Emily is three years old, has cerebral palsy and is yet to walk independently. Emily was born at 28 weeks with her twin sister Alice as part of an emergency C-section. Emily and Alice spent the first three months of their lives in hospital due to various infections and complications. A brain scan showed Emily had an extensive brain haemorrhage at three weeks old. As Emily was growing up, she has had developmental delays and the gap between her twin sister was getting bigger and bigger. In order to improve the quality of her life, Emily attends various private physio sessions in London on a weekly basis but Adeli is an intensive neuro-physio centre ( ) which includes multiple specialised therapies under one roof.
Emily must receive intense specialist physio treatment in order for her to accomplish walking by the age of 5, which is a significant milestone in development and will significantly impact her quality of life and future. Emily likes to play with her twin sister Alice and older sister Olivia and when she sees her sisters running or riding a bike, she wants to do the same thing and doesn’t understand why she cannot do it.
Emily has participated in the rehabilitation program at Adeli in June 2022 for two weeks. The cost of treatment at Adeli was EUR 3,500 for the specialised intensive physio plus EUR 1,500 for accommodation and food. We expect the costs to be the same for the next opportunity she can attend the program, which ideally will be in the next six months. You can see photos from Emily’s treatment here on the Adeli website .
We appreciate in these hard times people are facing that budgets are stretched and under inflationary pressure, anything you can do to contribute to Emily’s fund for intensive physio would be gratefully received. Please note any funds received will go directly to Emily’s parents Andrea and Brendan Langheim to fund treatment at Adeli or additional private physio treatments in London.
Thank you for all your support and good wishes to help Emily.
