Help Fund Declan's FIP Treatment
Donation protected
Well this is a post I never thought I would be making, but here we are...
What happened: A few weeks ago, one of my sweet kittens, Declan, was diagnosed with FIP (feline infectious peritonitis). Although a terminal disease in the United States, there is treatment available in the UK and Australia (explanation of big pharm drama that restricts its availability found here). However, one can acquire drugs in the states, thanks to a network of advocates and wonderful people.
The Treatment: A medication known as GS-441524, an anti-viral which is essentially the feline version of the popular Covid-19 treatment, Remdesivir. Ranging from $75-$120 per 5ml vial, the recommended course of treatment is 84 days of once daily sub-q injections. Currently, our cost is approximately $45/day --and as treatment progresses, the dosage, and subsequent cost, will increase to almost $55/day.
Where are we now?: As of Saturday, October 2nd, we are on day 20 of 84.
How is Declan?: After just two weeks, I have a completely new kitten! From anti-social and lethargic, refusing food and hiding in dark corners, he is now quite the social butterfly. Bright eyed and full of zoomies, he is seeking attention and affection, and has an absolutely ravenous appetite. No more nausea or diarrhea and he has gained back a majority of the weight previously lost. Treatment is working!
What next?: I cannot continue to afford treatment much past the next week. My savings are depleted, and even with two jobs, it's not sustainable. We have had such a miraculous turn around, that I can't fathom stopping before the 84 day course of treatment is complete. He came to me as a stray that survived a coyote attack that killed his mother, and he's come so far from that scared and reserved kitten he once was. If anyone deserves another miracle, it's this sweet boy.
How you can help: I am asking my (financially able) friends and family that are moved by the plight of this extremely adorable kitty to donate to a medical fund that will be used to purchase additional vials of GS-441524 and various supplies (needles, syringes), as well as fund supplemental care (blood work, sub-q fluids, etc). I am happy to provide updates and a plethora of cat photos/videos for anyone interested (a dog photo or two may slip in, be warned).
I am setting a goal of $3000 to cover a majority of the above expenses that my insurance doesn't. (Insurance only covers a portion of the supplemental care, not GS-441524, nor any other supplies).
Thank you for reading this massive block of text and thank you from the bottom of our hearts for any and all contributions (the smallest amounts really do help when you're penny pinching!). Your contribution also provides you 24-7 access to free kitty cuddles and head butts.
Thank you all, with love and whisker kisses, Laura, Declan, Ollie (big brother), and Milo (baby brother).
