Hi everyone,
I'm reaching out to ask for your support in a crucial step toward my career towards becoming a physician and underserved population medicine. I have been accepted for an “away” rotation at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), focusing on institutional prison rehabilitation medicine. This experience would be very near and dear to my heart and is vital for my goal of becoming a physician who directly addresses the profound health disparities faced by incarcerated and marginalized communities.
While I am incredibly fortunate to be on a scholarship at the UC San Diego School of Medicine, unfortunately, medical school scholarships rarely cover the extra costs associated with away rotations. Historically and currently, these rotations, which are critical for specialized training and residency applications, have been a financial luxury. Participating in an away rotation is often only feasible for students who are either awarded specific, rare travel grants or have the familial financial means to cover all expenses (travel, housing, application fees, etc.) themselves. Many of the medical school scholarships and institutional grants that historically helped fund these essential away rotations have been eliminated or significantly reduced recently due to widespread funding cuts for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.
Because I do not have access to these personal financial resources, I am launching this GoFundMe to ensure this essential educational opportunity doesn't remain out of reach for me.
My commitment to health equity
and passion lies in serving the underserved. I am currently enrolled in the Prime Health Equity program at UC San Diego School of Medicine, which is dedicated to training physicians to address health inequities in marginalized populations.
This UCSF rotation will provide hands-on experience in areas directly related to my interests, specifically:
• Institutional Prison Rehabilitation Medicine: Learning how to provide comprehensive, ethical care within the correctional system.
• Juvenile Detention Medicine: Understanding the unique health needs of youth in custody.
• Addressing the School-to-Prison Pipeline: Gaining insight into the systemic factors that lead to incarceration and how medicine can intervene.
This specialized training is not available at my home institution and is absolutely critical for preparing me to serve as a leader in this complex, high-need field.
How Your Donation Will Help:
Your contribution will directly cover the necessary costs for this rotation, including:
• Temporary housing in San Francisco
• Travel expenses
• Application and registration fees
Every dollar helps me translate my commitment to health equity from an academic interest into clinical reality.
Thank you for considering supporting my journey to serve those who need it most!
