Creating a fundraising page was the last thing Aisling wanted us to do but we felt we have little to no choices left.

On November 1st, 2024, my sister Aisling’s life changed overnight.

Aisling is 39 and a devoted mum to two young girls, aged 4 and 10. She was healthy, active, and working full-time when she was suddenly diagnosed with a large tumour compressing her spinal cord at the base of her skull. She needed urgent surgery.

Thankfully, she came through that operation with her mobility — but what followed has been devastating.

In the months after surgery, Aisling became critically unwell. She spent over three months in hospital with serious infections, including meningitis, and was later admitted again with C. diff.

For 10 months, Aisling and her husband Niall were left without answers or a clear treatment plan, while trying to manage daily pain and care for their young family.

Desperate for answers, Aisling travelled to the UK privately. There, she was diagnosed with two CSF leaks — meaning the fluid surrounding her brain and spinal cord is continuously leaking.

She now urgently needs two complex spinal surgeries, which cannot be done at the same time. The first alone is estimated at £40,000, with a second also required.

Without treatment, her condition carries serious risks, including superficial siderosis, which can lead to progressive neurological damage and even early-onset dementia.

Despite exhausting all options through the HSE and her insurer, she has been left with no clear pathway to treatment.

As a family, we never imagined being in this position — but we are now facing funding these surgeries ourselves.
