Hi, our names are Kai, Brendan, Katie, and Sarah Brown, and we’re fundraising for our Dad.
In March of 2023, our dad suffered a massive pontine hemorrhagic stroke. He was life-flighted to the hospital, spent time in a coma, and months in the ICU. There were long stretches when we didn’t know if he’d survive. And even if he did, we had no idea what his life, or ours would look like moving forward. Nothing prepares you for a moment like this.
Miraculously, he did survive. His mind is still sharp. His personality, his sense of humor, and his incredible spirit are all still there. He can talk, he can communicate, and he knows exactly who he is. That is something we will never stop being grateful for.
But physically, everything is different now. Our dad is considered medically quadriplegic. He’s lost the ability to walk, drive, sit up, breathe on his own, eat, and even speak clearly, as half of his face is paralyzed. Our Dad was always physically strong, so much of his identity was tied to being a fighter and a martial artist. Growing up, we saw him as someone who could take on anything. But now, his strength looks different. He continues to fight in ways most of us will never understand. Now trapped in a body that doesn’t respond to him.
Since being released from the ICU, he’s been living in a long-term care facility. It is a lonely place where he lies in a hospital bed all day, every day. The care he receives is minimal and, at times, neglectful. He has been left vulnerable and overlooked. As his children, we are doing everything in our power to change that.
We’re raising money to get our Dad out of that facility and into a home environment where he can be treated with the dignity, respect, and love he deserves. A place where he can be safe and supported, with consistent 24-hour care and access to the equipment and services he needs.
There are several things we need help funding. Relocation costs like moving, transportation, and storage are a major part of it. We’re also facing the need for ADA adaptations to make a home accessible for him. That includes building a wheelchair-accessible bathroom, adding ramps, installing electric door openers for emergency safety, widening doorways, and integrating technology and rehabilitation tools that can increase his functional independence. In addition, we’ll need short-term staffing to support him during the transition period until he is officially established as a resident in Riverside County. Once that happens, IHSS (In-Home Supportive Services) can kick in, but the wait could be 4–6 weeks. During that time, we’ll also need help from family and friends who are willing and able to assist with his day to day care.
If you’re able to donate, share our story, or offer physical support in any way, we can’t thank you enough. Every gesture, every dollar, every prayer each one makes a difference. Your support means more to us than words can express.
With gratitude,
Kai, Brendan, Katie, and Sarah Brown
