In late April my dog Arya experienced the onset of acute glaucoma. It caused her right eyeball to swell rapidly with a pressure 3x higher than normal, and within 36 hours she had gone blind. 

I have been trying to reduce the intraocular pressure with medicinal drops to see if any vision will return, but at this stage it would not be enough to preserve. The swelling of the eye quickly damages the delicate structures inside, and her pupil has remained permanently dilated even when the pressure is down. The pain caused by the swelling is comparable to a severe migraine and we have been struggling to manage it. 

The condition is genetic for her, which means it is ultimately a losing battle for dogs. I have scheduled a surgery to have the eye removed entirely, eliminating pain and restoring her quality of life. She is otherwise very healthy (all of her blood work and health tests were normal) and dogs typically recover well from losing an eye! The pressure in her left eye is currently normal and I can continue to use eye drops as a preventative to maintain her vision for as long as possible.

I am reaching out to anyone who could chip in to cover the accumulated veterinary costs. This includes some travel costs because the closest veterinary ophthalmologist is a 3.5-5 hour drive away. For the surgery I will need to drive up the night before because of intermittent closures on highway 101 during the day. However after the surgery, costs will become much more manageable and I will only have to pay for one of the eye drops! 


Arya has been my rock for the past 8 years. If it weren't for all of the research I did to raise her, I would not have fallen in love with science and switched careers. I am currently a biology graduate student and already struggle to make ends meet, so all of the charges have just been going on a credit card. The surgery needs to happen very soon regardless, but I would be incredibly grateful to anyone who has the means to help me pay off the accrued debt. I really hate to ask because I know how many folks are struggling financially right now from the pandemic, and how many important causes there are to donate to.
