Help camp in Mali devastated by fire

Donation protected
The security situation in Mali has been precarious for years, but in the last two years it has deteriorated even more dramatically with skirmishes being an almost weekly, if not daily, occurrence.

One of many consequences has been a significant increase in the number of internally displaced persons (IDPs), “persons or groups of persons who have been forced or obliged to flee or to leave their homes or places of habitual residence, in particular as a result of or in order to avoid the effects of armed conflict, situations of generalized violence, violations of human rights or natural or human-made disasters, and who have not crossed an internationally recognized state border." (United Nations Guiding Principles on Internal Displacement)

In Mali, these IDPs have largely settled in camps in and around Bamako, the capital, and other parts of the South, which are considered safer than the center and the North of the country.

For the last year we have been using this campaign to fundraise for language classes for children at two of these camps in Bamako - Senou and Faladie.  We were able to hire two teachers to instruct children how to read and write in local language (as requested by the camp inhabitants). Most of these children have never had the chance to get an education: the schools in their home region have been closed for years due to security concerns and in Bamako they can only attend school if they have a birth certificate, which they do not have, like most Malians.

The language classes in both camps have been extremely popular, but unfortunately we had to suspend them temporarily due to COVID-19. We plan to restart the classes as soon as it is safe to do so.

However, since the closure of classes, one of the camps, Faladie, was hit by a devastating fire that completely destroyed the entire area. Most huts are gone. A large number of animals, including cows, sheep, and goats, have been killed. Te camps' inhabitants have lost everything.

As a result, we have decided to divert the funds for this campaign to rebuild the camp. We want to buy food and other necessary supplies (such as plastic tarp, nails, etc) to support the camp's reconstruction. Any support from you will be crucial!

I will be responsible for sending the funds directly to the manager of the camp.
