Help fund a social justice endeavor!

My name is Kai Givens, and I am a junior at the Portland Waldorf High School. Last fall, while on exchange in Germany, I had the wonderful opportunity to travel to Switzerland and attend the Social Initiatives Conference, “Ethical Individualism: Transforming Self and Society”, at the Goetheanum. There I met a number of amazing people, one of whom is Irmgard Wutte. She has created an entrepreneurship program, “Nyendo Lernen”, where she brings high school students from Germany to the slums of Kenya to experience the realities of life firsthand, and to form relationships with the children there. Nyendo Lernen also makes and sells items to help pay for food for the children. Their ultimate goal is to support the poor in Kenya, so that they can support themselves.

I am very interested in participating in this program. Irmgard Wutte personally invited me to attend the Easter conference, where the program leaders are all meeting. I would love to go. However, I cannot afford the cost of airfare and travel expenses, and my parents are unable to assist me financially. I would be grateful for any financial help anyone can offer in support of me participating and learning from this social initiative endeavor. My goal is to raise $2000 to cover my flight, food, and travel costs. My hope is to buy my plane ticket as soon as possible, ideally within the next few weeks.

If given this opportunity, I plan to bring what I learn back to Portland, and apply it to the poverty issues here. This work will most likely become my senior project, where I hope to research the question: What is the best and most effective way to help people? I have always wanted to help the world to become a better place. After attending the Social Initiatives conference, as well as the North American Biodynamic conference (which I attended with a scholarship from the Biodynamic Association), I was further inspired to work towards social justice. The speakers I heard at these conferences: Joan Sleigh, Gerald Häfner, Irmgard Wutte, Orland Bishop, and so many others, all spoke with such passion, and their stories inspired me to act. Their work in the world is making an impact, and I want to learn from them, so that I too can make a difference.

Any amount of help and/or advice would be much appreciated! Any surplus of funds will go towards the school in Kenya, and the program I hope to bring to Portland.

Many thanks, and best wishes!

Kai Givens
