Five years ago, I left a religious career and took a job in food service at my grandma’s retirement community. I eventually got connected to a startup to explore a career in sales, but the startup failed while I onboarded. I moved to another firm and progressed from sales into a recruiter seat, only for them to layoff their Talent Acquisition team. Then I got another sales job, this time with a coding bootcamp. Within six months on the job, the firm that had acquired our bootcamp decided to gut it, laying off three quarters of our staff, myself included.

So I’m back in food service, but now I’ve had more than a taste of coding. While working at the bootcamp, I supported student projects, learned pieces of several coding languages, and built relationships with senior developers out in the field, gaining a clearer picture of exciting and nearly accessible career paths. I started doing pre-work for our program and then pre-work for a competitor’s program, and in both instances I had a knack for the work.

WHERE YOU COME IN:

Through a series of connections, I’ve managed to secure a seat in a new program from Dexian, an international tech staffing firm, and Grand Circus, a coding bootcamp out of Detroit. Starting August 5th I will commence a full-time (50+ hrs/week) three-month program to learn Data Analytics and Engineering with Python. The program cost is covered by Dexian (normally $14,000+), provided I collaborate with their firm to find job placement once I complete the program.

So the program itself is free! But after consecutive layoffs, multiple months of unemployment and working food service, I’m living paycheck to paycheck. I need some funds to sustain myself during the bootcamp. I’m asking for $8,000.

$8,000 will give me a runway of about five months coverage for rent, utilities, food, gas, medication, and any other minor life expenses during that timeframe.

TL;DR
