My name is Maria Zhukovskaia, and I’m a mother of four children. We live on the remote island of Saipan, a US territory.

On May 21 2025, our world suddenly changed forever — our beloved 12-year-old son Leo fell asleep in his bed and never woke up again. My boy, of sunshine and rainbows, was found cold and lifeless.

Leo was a special kid. He was diagnosed with Smith-Magenis Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder affecting approximately 1 out of 15,000 to 25,000 births annually, and was on the autism spectrum. But more than anything — he was the most joyful, vibrant soul we’ve ever known. He loved life with his whole heart. Every moment was a celebration for him, he learned to be the happiest boy in the world. He would sing, smile, dance — even though he couldn’t speak clearly, he still communicated so much love through what he could do.

Leo was our sunshine. Even though, occasionally, his behavior could get difficult, our love for him would never stop growing. He taught us what it means to live freely, to feel deeply, and to love unconditionally. His energy and sunshine were like a gift from above.

We are now facing the unimaginable — and doing so far from any civilization. Being on Saipan, all medical and funeral services are incredibly expensive. Leo always loved flying, and he adored his grandmother, who lives in another country.

We deeply want to fulfil his last wish. To bring him home to his roots, to his love, to the place where his grandmother lives – it is our holy duty.

He was an incredible kid. He lived with such fulfillment, excitement, and his life was full of the brightest sunshine.

Leo is now an angel. We believe he’s singing again — with all his heart — bringing love and light to children and families everywhere. Helping them be healthier, happier and at peace together.
