Help Friends of Mayer Park upgrade the Rose Garden!

Donation protected
We are Friends of Mayer Park, volunteering in Bebington since 2014. We meet twice weekly to look after Mayer Park, which was developed by Joseph Mayer and opened for community use in 1870. It's an important, historic and much loved green space in Bebington.

What are we doing with the Rose Garden?
Many of you local to Bebington will have seen the Friends using various means to control the weeds coming through the existing surface of our historic Rose Garden, a place where people love to walk, sit and enjoy the flowers. The weeds have become much more of a problem in recent years, taking up more and more of our small group of volunteers’ time throughout the Spring and Summer months.

What are we doing next?
After numerous discussions with Wirral Council and unsuccessful attempts at controlling the weeds, we want to install a new, improved surface that will reduce weeds and keep this area looking beautiful for years to come, making it more enjoyable and accessible for the community.

It will enable us to make better use of our time as a volunteer group by allowing us to focus efforts on more exciting projects elsewhere in the park.

Over the past few years we have renewed planting and increased biodiversity for the benefit of the roses already in the Rose Garden, as well as the wildlife and park visitors who enjoy sitting on the upper surround.

We were able to buy trees for the upper surround in 2025, thanks to funding from Vitaflo, which in years to come will bring some much needed shade from the heat generated in this area in the summer months.

We need your help to raise £3,000 for materials to carry out the work to renew the surface in the rose garden, which will include:
  • New gravel surface to replace the existing 'crazy paving'.
  • Substantial weed membrane, which will help us to keep control of the weeds and stop them from encroaching on the surface and other planting.
  • Improved drainage.

Any surplus funding will be used elsewhere in the park. Once we are funded, volunteers will be offering up their labour, as always, for free. There will be opportunities to help if you’d like to join in!

Work to improve the existing crumbling steps has already begun to improve access down into the rose garden.

We’d love it if you could share this page with friends and family and tell them why the park is important to you.

We'll keep you updated on progress through our fundraising page (here), our Facebook page and the noticeboards in the park.
