Help Freya, the Husky, Overcome Her Health Challenges
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Amy Mack and I'm fundraising for our dog Freya. I'm a huge animal lover and she is our 1 year old Siberian Husky that we rescued at 7 weeks old. Her and her brother were left abandoned in the city of Rochester at 6 weeks old and a kind young man took them in until he found a home for them. We usually go through a rescue agency for our dogs, but the universe had other plans for us this time. Even though my husband and I said no more huskies, only because of all the hair, she was so tiny and sweet we decided we were going to give her the best life possible. It broke my heart because there is never a reason to dump puppies. After getting her, we found out she had a heart murmur. I hoped she would grow out of it, which she did, thankfully. We were hoping that this was the only reason she was dumped. Then about at a year old Freya began to develop some symptoms of lameness in her left leg at times. It would come and go, but then it started to affect her right leg. We were doing chiropractic adjustments, she had several of those but it kept getting worse. We tested her for heartworm/tick born illnesses and did some X-rays of her hips. Our vet didn't see anything on the X-ray so we decided to treat her for Lyme disease even though it was negative, just in case of a false negative. When this didn't work, we scheduled an appointment with a neurologist and an MRI in Orchard Park. After seeing the neurologist she said Freya didn't have any neurological deficits, and told us it was her knees. So then we saw an orthopedic specialist. He looked at her X-ray and showed us she was born with a congenital birth defect in each leg which in turn caused her to tear the ligaments in both knees. There is a surgery to fix the bone and the knee, although quite extensive, but has very good results. With Freya being so young and healthy there won't be a lot of arthritis to deal with, and she should have great results with the surgery. This is where our family could use a little help. Unfortunately the surgery is going to run between $7,000-8,300 per knee ( surgery alone for both knees is $14,000-$16,000). That doesn't include pre surgery x-rays and after surgery x-rays (done 2 weeks after). The cost of X-rays are just over $1,000. So, at the very least $4,000 in X-rays after both surgeries are completed. I never thought I would have to ask for help for my pets, but because of my health I haven't been able to work in many years. Freya is loved by so many, not just her family. Neighbors/friends stop by to see her and also her dog friends. If you have the ability to help us out we would be so incredibly grateful. No amount is too small, even $5 or $10 will help give our blue eyed girl the life she so deserves. We understand times are tough right now so if you are not able to monetarily help Freya, please share our fundraiser. Thank you from the Mack family.
