Hello! I’m the single mom of a six year old, Freya. Since she was born a 27 week preemie, I was warned she could have teeth enamel issues. So far every dental visit has been perfect and smooth sailing.

Today at her biannual teeth cleaning, she got updated X-rays done, and since her X-rays one year ago she has developed a cavity that isn’t easily visible to the eye, but is deep in the dentin and close to the root.

The dentist wants to cap that tooth and do a couple of amalgam fillings in tiny cavities between a couple of other back teeth. The cost for the dental portion is $1054.

Because Freya had a tooth pulled last year (she slipped on the steps and bumped her teeth and lip and got an abscess above her front baby tooth) and it didn’t go so smoothly without anesthesia, the dentist is recommending anesthesia for this work to be done. Because the anesthesiologist doesn’t contract with any insurance, that portion is $1600.

I am a full time single mom that works full time, who also has my disabled mother living with me and this out of pocket cost is something I just don’t know how I’m going to manage.
