Freetown Innovation Lab was founded with the aim of promoting sustainable circular and energy solutions to tackle local challenges, while supporting jobs & livelihoods.
Over the last 4 years, we have proudly developed a recycled furniture range and started developing other recycled products for households and construction. In doing so, we’ve diverted many tonnes of waste from landfill and directly supported over 50 jobs and livelihoods in a country with significant unemployment.
We have also introduced Sierra Leone’s first ever energy exchange model, providing rural communities with access to power through payment with locally made goods.
Devastatingly our activities have been severely disrupted by fire at our HQ on February 4, 2025.
I’m thankful to the fire force service, the FIL team and the local community for helping to put the blaze out. Unfortunately we have lost much vital equipment. Our admin office and furniture factory spaces are badly damaged.
We are now focussed on cleaning up, and costing lost inventory.
This is a major setback for FIL, but this will not halt our ambitions to divert more waste, empower more young people and support communities in Sierra Leone.
A rebuild of the Freetown Innovation Lab now begins. Looking ahead, we will restart production of furniture and refresh our plans for other recycled products. We still aspire to become a hub for nurturing other young innovators in the green, blue, and circular economy industries.
By rebuilding and expanding our operations, we can continue transforming waste into opportunity, improving lives, and protecting our environment.
