My mother, who immigrated to this country looking for a better life and future for her family and future children, was stripped of her freedom and constitutional rights this morning. She has been living in the USA for 20+ years consistently and is mom to me and my little sister, who is below 18 years of age. She pays her taxes and has contributed her hard-earned money back into the U.S. economy for over two decades. She has zero criminal history in terms of arson, robbery, petty theft, or even disorderly conduct.

Yet this morning, while on her usual routine to get coffee, she was stopped and kidnapped by ICE agents who had zero reasonable articulable suspicion of a crime she committed and without a warrant for her arrest. She called me in a panic to run to the corner because “Police have stopped me.” I ran immediately to the corner and only helplessly watched as they took my mother away, the woman who has taught me only great human values and morals my entire upbringing.

I am a full-time student, so I didn’t have a job prior to this, but I applied to some immediately now that this has happened, and my little sister doesn’t work due to her being in high school. My mother was heavily involved and appreciated by her community. She is a woman of God who has attended her church every Sunday for the last year or so and is known for being generous and nice. She’d see a problem and without a thought jump in to give aid or help to people in distress.
