Help Brother Fred Heal After Traumatic Brain Injury
Fred is being released this fall after suffering a traumatic brain injury while incarcerated. He now uses a wheelchair, has Broca’s aphasia, and needs legal and medical support to live safely. Your gift—of any size—will fund guardianship help, benefits enrollment, and transition back into society.
Full story
Fred urgently needs legal, medical, and emotional support to rebuild his life. Your gift—large or small—will be a step of faith, helping provide the advocacy and care he so deeply needs.
My brother Fred has endured more than most could imagine. After losing his arm in a car accident, he developed an opioid addiction that led to incarceration. In prison, he suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI), which left him with major neurocognitive disorder resulting in severe memory loss, language impairment, attention deficit disorder, and a disability to plan or make decisions.
Fred can no longer walk and depends on a wheelchair, with only one arm for mobility. His Broca’s aphasia makes communication nearly impossible with him struggling to express himself through a combination of clicks, laughter and other sounds. He heavily relies on an alphabet board and a few flash cards to express himself. These challenges have left him isolated, frustrated, and in urgent need of ongoing care and support.
This fall, Fred will finally be released. But navigating Social Security, disability, and medical benefits is impossible without help. He urgently needs a guardianship lawyer and ongoing support to secure the care and stability he deserves.
As his sister, I have been traveling back and forth to visit him in prison, trying to explain the forms and comfort him through his fears. During my last visit he tapped out on his letter board “I love you, it’s not your fault I don’t understand” before giving me a hug that left both of us in tears and brought out a depth of powerlessness I have never felt before. It captured his incredible spirit just as much as the somber and heartbreaking reality of how much help he needs.
Our small family is doing all we can, but the emotional and financial costs are overwhelming. Your gift — no matter the size — will help provide legal advocacy, medical support, dignity, stability and hope Fred needs to rebuild his life.
If you cannot give financially, please lift up Fred in your prayers as we trust God for his care, healing and future.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for joining us on this journey.
