Fred and Melinda own a dive shop in Freeport, Grand Bahama. Melinda is from Alabama, and met Fred on a trip to the island. Apparently Fred took one look at her and decide he was going to marry her. I also married someone I met on vacation, and Melinda’s story was my guide and hope in making that decision. These people are truly good people, and their love is the real deal. They help everyone, they work hard, and Fred is the best damn diver I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing. He’s also a virtual encyclopedia. They are just wonderful people. This is what Melinda wrote on Facebook while watching Dorian approach:
“In looking at what is ahead of us, I am finding it hard to breathe. After having gone through a Cat 5 just 3 years ago, I know how bad this is going to be. In 2004, I had only been here for 9 months when Hurricane Frances hit us as a Cat 3 and sat on us for 3 days. I do not have enough time to describe how bad it was. My greatest fear came true and I was homeless for 3 weeks. I survived thanks to Fred Riger. 3 weeks later Hurricane Jeanne another Cat 3 hit us. we lived without power for over 2 months and no running water for over 1 month and the island was closed for 4 months so no business. We were able to find a place to live the day of Jeanne. Once again I feel I made it through because of Fred. He is my rock that gets me through tough and hard times. I am really scared now because he is worried and that scares me even more.
People ask why we stay. Our home is here and our business and our lives are here and I cannot leave Rexie and Dolly. We need to be here after the disaster to pick up the pieces of our lives. We have to be able to deal with any issues immediately or we will have nothing left. Sad as it is, people will steal it all if we are not here. We are hoping, praying, and anything else I can do that our roof stays on, we are uninjured and the dogs are ok and the boat stays afloat. We thanks everyone for your thoughts and prayers and love. They mean a lot to us and is comforting to know how many friends we have around the world. Pretty sure I did not stock up enough Mtn Dew. Love to you all and hope to be in touch soon.”
Last might before I went to bed, Melinda wrote, “the water is rising, the rain has no where else to go, and I don’t know how long the roof will hold.” I did not know if they would be alive in the morning.
Please help me help Melinda and Fred!
