My name is Forest, and I’m about to graduate from UC Davis with my bachelor’s in anthropology. I’ve just received an incredible invitation: to join an archaeological field expedition at Lyktos, on the island of Crete. This opportunity came after I attended the annual Archaeological Institute of America conference, where I met the director of the Lyktos project. His passion for the site and its history was inspiring, and I was thrilled when he invited me to join the team. Lyktos is a site of deep historical significance—according to the poet Hesiod, was the birthplace of Zeus.
This expedition is a golden opportunity for me to gain hands-on fieldwork experience right after graduation. I learn best by doing, and I thrive when surrounded by people who are truly passionate about their work. Over the past four years, I’ve spent more than twelve months biking through Europe, making connections and learning languages. Returning to Europe to start my archaeology career would allow me to nurture those relationships and build even more. The funds I’m raising will help cover the cost of airfare and hotel so I can participate in this exciting project.
Throughout my young life, I have been affected most of all by the generosity and encouragement given to me by both friends and strangers. Being given a roof to sleep under, a warm meal, advice for the road, or funding towards my wild cycling pursuits; these gifts have inspired me to show kindness and hospitality in turn. There is nothing so wonderful as giving. As I move forward from college and establish myself in this world, I look forward to giving back more and more. Anthropology is what has captivated me because people captivate me, and I care about them deeply. Any support for this journey means the world to me.
