Tom works as hard as he plays, and he plays hard. He is an avid motocross racer with a great record and has been working his way up the J Day Offroad Circuit standings for the past couple of years. Tommy is well known and supported in the J Day motocross community as Tommy 2 Stroke.
On Sunday, April 9th, 30 seconds into his first ride of the season, and on the first jump of the race, he was catapulted from his bike, landing directly on his head. (link to video below)
Miraculously, he escaped the accident without breaking his neck. He is alive, and for that we are all grateful. He did not escape unscathed, however, and his injuries are not insignificant. He two compression fractures to his spine - T6 and T11 - and 5 broken ribs.
With time and a lot of rehab, he will eventually be back on his feet, and able to function in a normal life, though there are still a lot of unknowns about how his injuries may limit him, and how long his recovery will be.
He is currently in the hospital, and once released will have to spend some time in an inpatient rehab facility, to continue healing and getting back his mobility.
Tom and his dog, Bauer, live in Putnam, CT, where Tom works as an independent contractor for Verizon, installing equipment in the wireless towers around the region. He has medical coverage, but no disability insurance, so between his required contribution to the medical costs and his every day financial obligations, expenses will quickly become a significant challenge.
He's got a lot of great people supporting him and loving him, but his world has been temporarily devistated, and any little bit you can contribute helps to make it a little less difficult for Tom.
No contribution is too small to make a difference.
Also...how can you resist this face?
