A close family friend and member of our law enforcement family is in need of our help. They would never be the type to reach out and ask for help themselves so I thought I would create this page. Matt Sailors worked for a police department outside of Denver, CO for 10 years, Pismo PD for 1.5 years, and Santa Maria PD for 7 years. After suffering years of back issues and surgeries he left the law enforcement life and went to work behind the scenes at a large security company. Those of you that know Matt know he is a hilarious, upbeat, outgoing, family man, that works hard and would do anything for his wife Jodi and their daughter Jordan.
On November 10th Matt experienced extreme pain in his right side and was taken to Arroyo Grande ER where they did a chest X-Ray and CT scan. Nothing serious was detected at that time and he was sent home. On November 12th the pain was extremely intense and he was taken to AGER again by ambulance. At that time he was diagnosed with Pneumonia and sent home with antibiotics. During the week he was on antibiotics his condition continued to rapidly decline. After being on antibiotics for 10 days and meeting with his primary doctor on November 20th, Matt had lost 10 pounds and his vitals were horrible. His doctor took one look at him and admitted him back to the ER. After more tests at the ER it was determined, along with the pneumonia, Matt also had fluid on his lungs and was transferred to French hospital later that evening, where a specialist was going to remove the fluid from his lungs the next morning. Once Matt was seen by the specialist they realized the seriousness and condition of the infection in his lungs and instead of just draining the fluid they did a surgery to insert two tubes into his back to start draining the infection. After four days of trying to rid the infection with drains and meds, multiple teams of doctors were very concerned that his condition was not improving.
On November 25th the specialist performed another surgery, removing the two tubes from his back and put two larger tubes in his chest hoping to increase the drainage of the infection. While admitted the doctors were performing multiple tests. A surprising test came back positive for Coccidioidomycosis (Valley Fever) and the results came back from his lungs as a serious strep infection. Doctors then explained to the Sailors family the seriousness of both illnesses and the long term effects it takes on the body. Also, estimating the recovery time of 8 months to a year under the care of a pulmonary specialist. On November 30th doctors came in and explained to Jodi and Matt that they see Valley Fever and they see strep infections, but it is very rare to see the two together and he is very lucky to still be alive. On December 1st one chest tube was removed and the second was removed on December 2nd. X-Rays still showed fluid on Matt's lungs, but doctors released him after 12 days in the hospital, in and out of intensive care. Since his first trip to the ER, four weeks ago, Matt has lost 25 pounds, is in immense pain, extremely weak, and has no energy.
Unfortunately, Matt has already exhausted all of his sick leave and vacation time. His employer does not offer pay for FMLA and this illness is not only a hardship mentally for the Sailors family, but also financially. Jordan seeing her dad, who is usually so strong, this weak has left her sad, stressed, and angry. Jodi is doing all she can to try to keep the spirits up, but the letters from the insurance company are already starting that ER visits will not be covered and the fight is on with them. If able, please help out in any way you can. Every dollar counts and would be so appreciated.
