Damien is my friend Samantha’s husband and they have 4 children - Charlie 8, Nancy 6, Joseph 4 & Elsie 1.
Damien who just turned 30 started suffering with headaches at the beginning of December which gradually got worse.
He visited the doctors several times and was told he was suffering with migraines and that a scan wasn’t needed!!!
January 19th 2021 he took a turn for the worse and Samantha called an ambulance and he was taken to hospital. It was there that a scan was finally done (after many calls and appointments)that a mass was seen at the front of his brain.
He was transferred to the John Radcliffe hospital in Oxford where more tests were done. He had an emergency operation on the Saturday where a golf ball size cyst was removed and a biopsy done.
Two weeks later they had the devastating news that Damien had a grade 3 brain tumour - an anaplastic astrocytoma. He would need another brain operation, radiotherapy and 12 months of chemotherapy.
To make matters worse and where we can all try to help....
They had actually sold their house (after 4 days on the market) as they were needing a bigger home for their family (2 adults and 4 children in a 2 bedroom house) they had found a home to move to but after having Damien's diagnosis they pulled out. The fear of a bigger mortgage in such an uncertain time felt like the best thing to do (Samantha knew she could afford their mortgage along if need be) but moving to a bigger home could drag the family into more hardship.
In the midst of this they moved into Samantha's mums house for extra help and support with children and Damien (who at this point couldn't be left alone) which was the best thing at the time. Although they all love it there (Samantha's mum is truly amazing) and it is a warm welcome home for them, Samantha and Damien could really do with being home, in their own home. To make this possible it needs to be extended, quite a lot. They need to turn a 2 bedroom home into a 4 bedroom home.
Getting a new mortgage is out of the question for Damien after his diagnosis.
Damien underwent an operation to remove the tumor and will be undergoing radiotherapy along with chemo. This isn't a quick fix, Damien is looking at 12 months chemotherapy!!!
They would all like to get back home but its just so cramped (hence the house sale) so we would all love to help and raise some funds to have their house extended for the family to return and stay in their home.
Not only that but funds to help the family along this long hard road.
Its very uncertain times with Damien too unwell to work and Samantha having to put her work on the back burner to be his carer.
A truly lovely young family that would really appreciate this help.
