Helping the Hurtons

If your question is why, so is ours.

On the morning of Thursday, August 13, the Hurton family's world shattered forever as they lost their beloved fourteen year-old son, brother, and friend.

Samuel was discovered unresponsive, hanging from his loft bed. His father, his sister Maddie, and dear friend Max immediately called 911 and performed CPR. Paramedics and medical staff worked tirelessly for over an hour, but were unsuccessful in reviving him.

In June, Samuel finished his freshman year at Edison High School where he flourished as a student and as an athlete. The 80 pound boy with a baby face was now a mature young man. He loved swimming with his friends on his high school swim team, singing in the school’s choir, learning new subjects like Latin, and proving his natural ability to out-debate others. When not busy with school or athletics, he spent his time on video games where he made connections throughout the world. He enjoyed playing Dungeons and Dragons with his friends, watching anime, and reading mythology.

Samuel was a Life Scout and Senior Patrol Leader with Troop 4077, and dedicated many hours to leading and mentoring younger scouts. He loved his scouting adventures, especially those with his dad. Some of his fondest memories included hiking Old Rag, whitewater rafting in Ohiopyle, and scuba diving at Sea Base St. Croix.

Typical summer days would include spending hours at Virginia Hills Swim Club where he was on the Tidal Wave swim team. He loved being with his friends, whether in the water swimming or hanging out on the pool deck. His generosity was shown through the hours he spent volunteering in the snack bar, preparing the pool for the 2020 season, and building out the interior of the new lifeguard house.

The tragic and unexpected loss of Samuel has devastated his family and friends.  Sam was loved by all who met him, and he loved meeting new people - whether virtual or in person.  He had a kind demeanor, an inviting laugh, and a maturity beyond his years.

The Hurton family has a million questions with no answers. Sam knew he was loved, and he loved others. He will forever be in the thoughts, minds, hearts, and prayers of all who he left behind. Samuel always looked forward to the next season of life, and following in his example, the family looks forward to when they will be reunited with him again.

This GoFundMe has been setup to assist the Hurton family with immediate expenses related to Samuel's funeral.  Thank you for your support and prayers for the Hurton Family during this difficult time.
