Update: Wow! The response received so far is simply amazing! I am so happy to see the love and support rolling in for the family.
The goal has been reached, but it was arbitrary, we have no idea what Derryn’s costs could be. No amount of money can replace a lost father and husband, but your support will definitely be appreciated. Keep it coming!!
The Culverwells are special people. They are without a doubt the kindest and most genuine family we have ever met. After two years cruising the Caribbean, they were on their way to the Panama Canal to make the big puddle jump across the Pacific and to eventually take Aqua Lobo back home to New Zealand.
They treat everyone they meet like family and it breaks my heart to be writing this message.
On May 2nd, while anchored in a remote part of Guna Yala, Panama, the Culverwells were attacked by armed robbers. Al was mortally wounded defending his wife and two children. Derryn and Briar were wounded in the attack (and have since received medical care) Fynn was reportedly unharmed physically but I can only imagine the psychological damage done to these poor children.
Derryn will be faced with multiple logistical challenges ahead. A team of people are waiting on standby, ready to assist in Panama however necessary.
While a shoulder to cry on is readily available here, funds for this type of tragedy may not be. A family is in need and people have reached out and requested this campaign so they may send help from afar.
Derryn, you are not alone, and an army of people love you and are happy to help your beautiful family.
If you wish to transfer the funds directly to a NZ bank account, the New Zealand Paua Industry Council has set up a donation account for Derryn, Briar and Fynn. Al was a long serving council director.
The bank is BNZ, account #02-0500-0698118-000, please reference “Alan C” on your donations.
