I'm Jack, and I'm setting up this GoFundMe on behalf of my sister Hayley, her husband Scott and their two beautiful little girls.
The past seven weeks have been an incredibly confronting and emotional time for their family, and as they face an uncertain road ahead, we're reaching out to our wider community for support.
On 14 September, Scott was airlifted from Launceston to The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne with extreme, unexplained abdominal and back pain. The following day, he was admitted to ICU and placed on a ventilator. At 4:30am, Hayley received a call from the ICU team telling her to get to Melbourne as soon as possible. For the next ten days, Hayley lived with the uncertainty of not knowing whether each day would be Scott's last.
Eventually, Scott was diagnosed with aggressive stage 3 B-cell lymphoma. Chemotherapy began immediately, and after responding positively to treatment, he was able to come off the ventilator just six days later.
The weeks that followed were incredibly difficult. Scott completed two rounds of chemotherapy, but one of his biggest challenges was recovering from ICU-acquired weakness. He had to relearn how to do almost everything, from swallowing and eating to standing and walking.
Through an enormous amount of determination, he slowly began making progress. He was walking, talking and eating again, and his doctors eventually gave the family the go-ahead to return home to Launceston, where Scott could continue his chemotherapy as an outpatient.
They were due to fly home on Tuesday 27 October. However, the day before they were due to leave, the family received devastating news. Scott's lymphoma had progressed to stage 4, with six lesions identified on his brain.
His condition deteriorated rapidly. Within just four days, Scott had lost the ability to move or speak and subsequently developed aspiration pneumonia. The family were told that it was time to consider palliative care.
Rather than give up hope, Hayley and Scott made the decision to trial a different type of chemotherapy as a last resort.
Remarkably, within just two days of starting the new treatment, Scott began showing significant signs of improvement. Only 72 hours ago, the family feared he might not survive the day. While there is still an incredibly long and uncertain road ahead, these improvements have given everyone renewed hope.
If Scott continues to respond to treatment, it will mean another lengthy period of treatment and rehabilitation in Melbourne.
And this is where we need your help.
Throughout this entire ordeal, Hayley has relocated to Melbourne to be by Scott's side, bringing their two young daughters with her. Their youngest was just three weeks old when Scott first became unwell and is now ten weeks old. Their eldest is almost four.
They have spent the past seven weeks navigating hospital life, treatment, rehabilitation and the enormous emotional toll of having their family turned upside down, all while trying to keep some sense of normality for their little girls.
During Scott's initial ICU admission, Hayley and Scott decided against setting up a GoFundMe. Scott previously had a fundraiser ten years ago when he underwent a double lung transplant due to his Cystic fibrosis, and they never wanted to feel they were asking people for help again.
However, recently Hayley posted in what she believed was a private Facebook group, simply asking whether anyone knew of more affordable accommodation options in Melbourne. She woke up to an overwhelming response, with so many people offering accommodation, assistance and support in whatever way they could.
It was a reminder of just how many people care about this family.
The reality is that after seven weeks in Melbourne, they have now exhausted the accommodation funding and support available to them. They have been leaning on their incredible family and friends, but the financial strain is becoming increasingly difficult.
With Scott's future still so uncertain, Hayley is understandably worried about the financial impact this prolonged hospital stay and everything that comes with it could have on their two little girls.
We're setting up this fundraiser to help ease some of that pressure.
Every donation will go towards helping cover accommodation, everyday living expenses in Melbourne and whatever else the future holds for this family.
If you're in a position to donate, any amount, no matter how small, would make a genuine difference. If you're unable to donate, sharing this fundraiser with your friends, family or wider community would also mean so much.
We will use this page to share updates on Scott's progress and keep everyone informed along the way.
On behalf of Hayley, Scott and their girls, thank you for the incredible kindness, generosity and love already shown to them. It means more than words can express.
Help keep this family together while Scott continues to fight.
