Help for Ruth and Hiram’s COVID Medical bills

This is the COVID-19 story of our Mother and Father, Ruth and Hiram.

Our father, Hiram, is diabetic and has been battling chronic renal malfunction for around 4 years. Our mother, Ruth, has complications that are related to an ongoing renal life condition caused by a botched urinary system operation over 40 years ago.
Mid November 2020, both of them fell ill. Hiram had what seemed an acute gastroenteritis and Ruth, chronic fatigue. Hiram had to spend a day in a private clinic with a drip due to severe dehydration with nausea stabilisers and intravenous painkillers.
On Tuesday 24th November, they had appointments for their monthly check-ups at their local (public) hospital, however, they were refused entry due to the fact that my mum’s oxygen levels were below 80.
They were told that both of them needed urgent care and that their usual GP was not going to be able to refer them to any specialists as due to the pandemic, there were no specialist consultations available.
They waited 6 hours in the emergency room and were told they were going to be unable to admit them. They then went to three different private hospitals, which also refused them treatment or admision on the grounds that only confirmd COVID cases were being admitted.
A family friend who is a doctor advised that mum urgently required oxygen, however, the oxygen supply in Mexico is scarce and it took over 12 hours to find a compensator tank available to rent. She spent all this time with a dangerously low oxygen supply.
The following day we had positive confirmation of COVID-19 as well as a diagnosis of pneumonia and extreme dehydration. The antibiotics for the pneumonia consisted of 7 daily shots at a cost of $1,800 pesos / $90 USD / £72 each.
Since that day, what followed has been an endless amount of lab works, scans and private consultations with Doctors: gastroenterologist, pneumologist, nephrologist, cardiologist and neurologist.
All the consultants agreed that it was very unlikely mum would recover and that dad was also very close to passing.
They spent the following weeks alone, at home (Hiram Jr could only be with them at times, and we couldn't have anyone come into the house and risk their own health).
Just before Christmas after a couple of tomography’s, urine cultures and several blood tests, they were both diagnosed with severe affected renal function, pulmonary lesions and heart lesions caused by presence of the SARS virus (COVID-19) and e-coli.
By the grace of God, dad seems to have turned a corner and whilst he continues to display long-covid related symptoms, he seems to be getting slightly better each day, although his blood pressure continues to be extremely high and his sugar levels continue to be also dangerously high.
Mum, on the other hand, continues to rely on oxygen throughout the day and is showing a cardiovascular malfunction resulting from inflammation provoked by COVID, which has kept her blood pressure extremely high as well as several other discomforts.
No full diagnosis has been given as she needs to have a further study called echocardiogram (programmed for March as there are no appointments available) at a cost of around $10,000 pesos / $500 USD / £400.
In the meantime, she has been prescribed a treatment to help reduce the inflammation of her heart. A course of 20 pills costs $1,500 pesos / $75 USD / £60.
To date, the medical bill is in excess of $100,000 pesos / $5,000 USD / £4,000:
-Various doctor consultations: $20,000 pesos
-Lab works and tests: $40,000 pesos
-Medicine: $30,000 pesos
-Oxygen Supply: $15,000 pesos
These expenses have been mostly covered my parents (on credit cards), and us, their children.
They received a donation from some members of our family early December, which gave them much respite at the time and allowed them to pay for the month’s oxygen supply, a couple of tomography’s and blood tests.
Our parents both live in Mexico City and rely on dad’s state pension. All their health care should have been provided by the Public Health, however, as like the rest of the world, they are struggling to cope, and unfortunately, our parents weren’t event admitted to be provided with the most basic care, let alone, take care of the more complex medical needs.
Anyone who knows us knows we ask very little from others but feel we have no option but to ask for help as their situation continues to throw new challenges and with these, unexpected expenses that are simply spiralling out of control on top of the already mounting credit card debts.
Unfortunately, all the tests, consultations and treatment will have to continue to be done privately as the public health service is uncapable of coping with the current situation and unable to provide the specialist care they need.

Esta es la historia de COVID-19 de nuestros padres, Ruth e Hiram.
Hiram, nuestro padre, es diabético y ha estado luchando contra el mal funcionamiento renal crónico desde hace unos 4 años. Nuestra madre, Ruth, tiene complicaciones relacionadas con una enfermedad renal causada por una operación fallida del sistema urinario hace más de 40 años.
A mediados de noviembre de 2020, ambos se enfermaron. Hiram tenía lo que parecía gastroenteritis aguda y Ruth, fatiga crónica. Hiram tuvo que pasar un día en una clínica privada con suero intravenoso debido a una deshidratación severa con estabilizadores de náuseas y analgésicos intravenosos.
El martes 24 de noviembre, tenían citas para sus chequeos mensuales en su hospital local (público), sin embargo, se les negó la entrada debido a que mi madre presentaba niveles de oxígeno por debajo de 80.
Les dijeron que ambos necesitaban atención urgente pero que su médico general habitual no podría darles pases con ningún especialista pues debido a la pandemia, no había consultas especializadas disponibles.
Fueron a urgencias y finalmente despues de 6 horas les dijeron que no podrían ser admitidos. Acudieron a tres hospitales privados diferentes, los cuales también se negaron a admitirlos con el argumento de que solo estaban tratando casos confirmados de COVID-19.
Una amiga de la familia que es médico nos dijo que mamá necesitaba oxígeno con urgencia. El suministro de oxígeno en México es escaso y tomó más de 12 horas encontrar un tanque compensador disponible para alquilar. Pasó todo este tiempo con un suministro de oxígeno peligrosamente bajo.
Al día después, nos confirmaron que mamá daba positivo por COVID-19, así como un diagnóstico de neumonía y deshidratación extrema. Los antibióticos para la neumonía consistieron en 7 inyecciones diarias a un costo de $1,800 pesos / $ 90 USD / £ 72 cada una.
Desde ese día, lo que siguió fue un sin fin de análisis de laboratorio, escáneos y consultas privadas con médicos: gastroenterólogo, neumólogo, nefrólogo, cardiólogo y neurólogo.
Todos los docotres estuvieron de acuerdo en que era muy poco probable que mamá se recuperara y que papá también estaba muy cerca de morir.
Pasaron las siguientes semanas solos, en casa (Hiram Jr. solo podía estar con ellos a veces, y no podíamos permitir que nadie entrara en la casa y arriesgara su propia salud).
Justo antes de Navidad, después de un par de tomografías, urocultivos y varios análisis de sangre, ambos fueron diagnosticados con función renal gravemente afectada, lesiones pulmonares y cardíacas causadas por la presencia del virus del SARS (COVID-19) y e-coli.
Por la gracia de Dios, papá parece haber merjorado un poco aunque continúa mostrando síntomas relacionados con el ‘Covid de largo plazo’, pero va mejorando un poco cada día, aunque su presión arterial sigue siendo extremadamente alta y sus niveles de azúcar también siguen siendo peligrosamente altos.
Mamá, por otro lado, sigue dependiendo del oxígeno durante todo el día y muestra un mal funcionamiento cardiovascular como resultado de la inflamación provocada por COVID, que ha mantenido su presión arterial extremadamente alta, así como varias otras molestias.
No se le ha dado un diagnóstico completo ya que necesita un estudio adicional llamado ecocardiograma (programado para marzo ya que no hay citas disponibles) a un costo de alrededor de $ 10,000 pesos / $ 500 USD / £ 400.
Mientras tanto, está tomando ya un tratamiento para ayudar a reducir la inflamación del corazón. Un curso de 20 pastillas a un costo $ 1,500 pesos / $ 75 USD / £ 60.

Toda la atención médica debió haber sido brindada por la Salud Pública, sin embargo, como en el resto del mundo, están luchando por hacer frente a esta crisis y, desafortunadamente, nuestros padres no fueron admitidos para recibir la atención más básica, y mucho menos, atender estas necesidades médicas más complejas.
A los que nos conocen, saben que en general, pedimos muy poco o casi nunca ayuda a los demás, pero sentimos que no tenemos otra opción pues esta situación continúa presentando nuevos desafíos y, con estos, gastos inesperados que simplemente se están saliendo de control, aunados a la ya muy grande deuda crediticia.
Desafortunadamente, todas las pruebas, consultas y tratamientos deberán seguir realizándose de forma privada, ya que el servicio de salud pública no cuenta con la capacidad en este momento para brindarles la atención especializada que necesitan.
