Help for Rebecca Nyibol

Rebecca is a 29 year old professional midwife in Duk County, South Sudan. She has three daughters, 11, 7 and 4 years old.

Rebecca is the breadwinner of the family.  When Duk Payuel was attacked last year, Rebecca was shot in the arm, shattering her elbow and causing her to lose  mobility in the arm.  The injury has since prevented her from working, which has had a significant impact on her family.

Rebecca recalled the attack last year in Duk Payuel:

"Everything was quiet, and then an ambush attack came.  We began running and I was shot in the leg. I fell to the ground and, then I saw a man standing over me and I thought my life was over.  He shot but the bullet did not kill me.  It struck my elbow and shattered my right arm.  I was fearing for my life but I survived.

"Something when I’m alone I get scared and there is a feeling that the attack is happening all over again."

Since that attack Rebecca’s life has changed significantly. Rebecca had to pull her children out of school because she could not afford the school fees once she lost her ability to work.  Rebecca says that “the attack changed my life because I use to do something I was proud of, but now I can’t live like a normal person.  I can’t wash her own clothes or even cook for the children.”

Rebecca is in constant pain but she proclaims that she would gladly accept the pain if only she could live a normal life.

Rebecca says:

"If someone is willing to help me I can still do something before it is still late.  If I can get healthy and I can still work for my family.  All I want is to live a normal life again."

An orthopedic surgeon has diagnosed Rebecca’s case and he is confident he can replace the elbow, which will help Rebecca recover 90 percent movement in the elbow.  If the surgery is successful, Rebecca would regain her independence and be able to work again.  She needs $6,900 for the surgery, and to date we have received pledges totaling $2,000.  Any amount raised over the cost of surgery will help Rebecca support her family while she is recovering.

Your donation will not only save Rebecca's livelihood, but potentially the lives of thousands of mothers and babies she will be able to help once again. There are not many midwives in this part of South Sudan, so her services are sorely needed. Please help Rebecca return to work.
