Surgery to save Piper the Rescue Dog

My name is Brian Platte and I’m a student at Michigan State University graduating in only a few weeks. My girlfriend and I have a beautiful 10 month old rescue dog named Piper, who is the most caring and loving dog you will ever meet. Whenever she sees anyone, even if she hasn’t met you before, she whines in excitement as if she hasn’t seen you in years. She is my world, and before having her I didn’t have a purpose in my life.

On April 20th, I was playing outside with Piper when she was struck by a hit-and-run driver. I immediately rushed her to the emergency room and had her assessed by Michigan State Univeristiy’s Veterinary Medical Center, one of the best vets in the area, to assess her situation.

After multiple x-rays and evaluations, she was diagnosed with multiple severe deep tissue wounds on her hind legs as well as minor bruising in her lungs. Upon further examination two days later, Piper was also diagnosed with a spinal fracture that required immediate surgery.

The vet gave us two options 1) Euthanize her due to the risk of her becoming fully paralyzed or 2) Proceed with the surgery which may or may not give Piper back her full mobility. Piper is my world, and I couldn’t let her go at the hands of a scumbag hit-and-run driver so I decided to proceed with the surgery.

The cost for her initial treatment of her deep tissue wounds was $2,000. After discovering her spinal fracture two days later that required immediate surgery, that cost was approximately $8,000 pending official charges upon completion of her procedure. I will update the campaign goal accordingly after all expenses are accounted for.

The cost of all of the treatment that Piper received exceeded the amount that a struggling college student such as myself can afford, and is the reason for me sharing Piper's story. I was forced to take a loan out to finance her bills for the time being, and I am in a desperate situation for help. Any and all support is greatly appreciated more than words can describe. Even if you are not in the position to donate, sharing Piper’s story with your friends and family so that this scumbag driver doesn’t win this battle over life and death would be greatly appreciated.

I will keep everyone updated with her status as she recovers from this traumatic time.

Thank you,
