Friends, family and colleagues,
Many of you know Dr. Peter Pierrot either through your association with Double Harvest Clinic in Haiti where he is the medical director, or through your other commitments to Haiti through medical teams including Blue Sky, Green Bay, Miami Baptist, Tri State, and Manhattan. You are certainly well aware of his profound commitment to deliver primary care medicine to the citizens of his country. Dr. Peter has had a very difficult year.
In February of 2021, in the midst of the Covid pandemic, kidnappings and violence were increasing all around him and his wife and young daughters. Several of their close friends were kidnapped for ransom. They made the difficult decision to have Ruth take the girls to the United States as they were no longer safe in their own country. Peter stayed behind, continuing to work at Double Harvest, but with the increasing gang violence in Croix de Bouquet, he would travel each day with an armed driver to get him to work. As Covid shut down the US Embassy in Haiti, he was unable to get his visa renewed, something he had never had a problem with in the past.
Then, this summer, just a few weeks before his scheduled appointment at the US Embassy in Haiti for his visa renewal, Haiti's president, Jovenel Moise was assassinated, and the region in and around Port au Prince quickly deteriorated into lawlessness and gang rule. With a target on Peter's back as a young doctor working at the Double Harvest Clinic, and with more friends being kidnapped and shot all around him, Peter fled to the Dominican Republic, fearing for his own life.
Through all of this, he remains unable to get his visa renewed given both the pandemic as well as the lawlessness that now defines his country. This February marks one year since he has seen his wife and children. While continuing to try and process his existing visa, he is now actively working with counsel to file for Humanitarian Parole.
Several of us are now actively engaged in getting Peter the legal and logistical help he needs and providing both the emotional and economic resources he needs to finally return to visit his family as he prepares for his eventual return to Haiti, his home, where he remains deeply committed to continuing the practice of primary care medicine. To that end, we are promoting this GoFundMe campaign. Your donations will go directly to a fund dedicated for Peter at the Holy Redeemer Hospital (where Peter's children were born). The money will be used for his legal assistance and to support a job for him at Holy Redeemer.
Thank you for your consideration and generosity to help a man that has contributed so much to the success of our efforts in Haiti!
