Help for Pablo's MAS Journey
Donation protected
Dear friends,
My family is humbly seeking for your assistance in the medical funding of our son. After a healthy & full term pregnancy, I finally gave birth on 23rd Oct to my little boy. Sadly, he was not breathing so he was wheeled straight into the NICU 20 minutes post delivery, after his doctors' attempt to resuscitate him in the delivery room. That emergency did not allow me to see his face nor touch him.
He suffered from Severe Meconium Aspiration Syndrome and low birth weight. There is very little (to almost none) awareness on the severity of MAS; and I did not have an idea how serious my son's stage was until I walked into the NICU as soon as I recovered few hours later. He was on a mechanical ventilator, intubated, sedated, had several transfusions and medications, and feeding on total parenteral nutrition or TPN. That went on for 4 excruciating weeks. It wasn't until after that when we're finally able to hold him.
He was extubated and now being fed via tube with breastmilk + fortifier, but that phase was only the beginning of yet another journey. He is still on high flow oxygen support in the NICU as the results of the complications due to MAS are still being addressed: persistent pulmonary hypertension, hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, broncho pulmonary dysplasia, sepsis, and myocarditis.
Our bill has reached almost Php 3 Million (US$ 62,000) and charges still continue to pile up day by day. It is very unfortunate that my current insurance coverage excludes complications in newborns upon delivery, making our son’s entire hospitalisation journey an out of pocket expense for our family. I guess there are just really some things you cannot prepare for. And with our income severely affected by the pandemic, we have exhausted our entire savings already for the ongoing treatment of our little boy. The doctors have been very honest in telling us that there may be a long term care involved for the chronic lung disease he incurred from all the insults brought by MAS.
With all the trauma, overwhelming number of emergencies, new medical terminologies we've gone through (and still going through) for the past couple of months, it has been very difficult for my husband & I to open up about our son's story. But now we humbly knock on your generous hearts as our family needs all the help we can get. With a medical bill that sees no end in sight, we would appreciate any amount you can share in making our dear Pablo better. That, plus a whole a lot of prayer so we can finally bring him home.
God bless.
