Life rarely turns out the way we plan.
Phillip and Catherine planned to enjoy life and live comfortably for many years together but it did not happened that way.
Changing economy, financial hardships and declining health changed their plans in a big way these past few years. Phillip was diagnosed with colon cancer February 2018. Phillip fought hard but lost this battle January 19, 2019. Catherine was left to continue on, adjusting to a new life alone, dealing with the end of a business and added financial responsibilities all the while coming to work as usual and stoically smiling through it all. Gradually she began noticing some changes in her own health: fullness in her abdomen and shortness of breath. In August of this year (2019) an x-ray revealed fluid in her lungs and abdomen. A biopsy revealed metastatic ovarian cancer. She was especially shocked because in 2009 after discovering she had a predisposition to this very cancer (positive BRCA gene) she underwent prophylactic surgery to have her ovaries, uterus and breasts removed.
Catherine is now undergoing chemotherapy all the while continuing to work and continuing to deal with the recent loss of Phillip. This includes the stress of dealing with the ends and outs of caring for a home while trying to resolve Phillip's business estate. Additionally, she is having side effects of chemotherapy such as fatigue, nausea, hair loss, etc.
During Phillip's illness Catherine's paid time off was depleted so now she is not paid when she is out of the office for treatment visits, scans and lab testing. The side effects of the chemotherapy make her so sick she is at times unable to drive or work. Because of her illness she does not have enough income to pay bills. Any funds that you may be able to contribute will help pay for medical expenses, lab tests, scans, parking at the hospital, gas and food. Presently, Catherine has weekly lab tests and IV chemotherapy every three weeks in Chapel Hill. The next scan will be in December. This scan will determine the date for her abdominal surgery and surgery in the upper chest to remove cancer.
Catherine has a loving but small support system: a sister in France and two sister-in-laws near her home. As her friends and co-workers we just want to show her some love and assist her with support. We ask you as our friends, co-workers and family to please join us if you can to show Catherine some love also.
Life is better when we share it together.
Thank you!
