Help for my Husband, Ken-Lin Wong, who has had a really bad Stroke
My husband and I had looked for so long for the right person and we finally found each other in 2014. We've been married for 3 years and 3 months. Early in March, my husband had a stroke, but was able to come home. A few weeks later, he had brain swelling at the site of the stroke. As a result of this, he has lost all function on his left side, including his ability to see much at all out of his left eye. His speech has also been greatly affected, but this has shown improvement from speech therapy.
Unfortunately, Ken-Lin does not have health insurance. He spent 2 weeks at Ben Taub Hospital and has been at Quentin Mease Hospital for rehab for 3 weeks. Doctors say he will be there until April 20. Once he gets home, he will continue out-patient rehab at Quentin Mease. He will also need to see an eye doctor for glasses, which might offer some vision improvement. I have no idea how we will pay for his time in the hospital or other expenses.
We will need to purchase supplies to help Ken-Lin come home. He’s not able to sit up or stand. Doctors say he will need maximum assistance for any kind of mobility and moderate or 50% assistance for some self-care. He is able to feed himself with his right hand, but needs monitored eating. For just about everything else he needs assistance, which will partly be in the form of an adjustable, hospital bed and wheelchair, which the church agreed to buy. Church members have donated a shower bench and chair, as well as some money to get him started in physical therapy. Much more money is needed for out-patient physical, occupational, and speech therapy. In addition to all of this, some modifications will need to be made to our house for wheelchair access, such as a ramp to get into the home and some adjustments for him to get into the bathroom. It will also be necessary to get a Hoyer Lift for myself and his parents to transfer him from bed to wheelchair.
His parents have graciously agreed to help take care of him once he is released from the hospital, and while they are healthy, they are also elderly. I worry about them hurting themselves while trying to transfer him. I’m looking for someone to live with us to help care for him when I’m at work or maybe to come for part of the day – at least to relieve his parents from time to time and to help with what they struggle with.
This school year has been a really rough one. I still need to finish repairs on the roof, walls, and ceilings from Hurricane Harvey damage and the A/C has been broken since August. As hot weather is approaching, the A/C will be required when Ken-Lin comes home, so I have to get it repaired or replaced before then. The washer has also stopped working. I really need the washer fixed to be able to do laundry at home again. I’ve been doing as much work as I can, but we really need help financially for all of these things.
With stroke, there is no way to know how much function will come back or when it will come back. We hope and pray that he will fully recover. There’s so much more we want to do together when he recovers, like the cover photo of us enjoying the sand and breeze at Lake Michigan. We want so much more time with each other. He has already begun to work hard to regain what he can, and I know he will continue to do so. He wants to be able to stand, walk, and hopefully dance again. God has been with us so far as he has begun to recover. I hope God will work through all of you to help with this financial burden. We would greatly appreciate your help. May God bless you!
