Today is my B-day! And I wanted to ask all my Facebook friends for help for my blind home care client who is running short of cash every month to cover his very humble living situation, constantly on the edge of being evicted.

My client’s name is Michael, and some months ago I was shocked with his story and conditions that he lives in. He is 63 years old and blind as a result of physical assault during his years as a truck driver. He worked as a truck driver all his life, since he was 18, just like his dad. He was born in Georgia, but has no family left alive. (Note: the picture above is not actually him for privacy purposes)

The story is very long if I have to tell all of it, but the thing is he is a good man, no drugs, no alcohol, and wants to get back to work, but it’s not easy for a blind man. Right now he is behind on his rent, which is higher than his Social Security disability income. In November he will face the threat of eviction. He has no money to even buy eye drops, cleaning supplies, roach traps, clothes, and water.

Cobb County provides him with homemaker services only 2 hours every other week. He has a heart condition but he is unable to see any of his doctors because companion services for blind people apparently don’t exist! And free transportation service doesn’t solve his problem! Dropping off a blind guy by the Emory Medical Center is not the same as getting him to the actual room to see a doctor!

I am working on helping him find subsidized housing but this could take at least a year. I've taken him to Emory cardiologist, to Marietta Housing Authority, to Marietta vocational rehab agency, and our last hope, Disability Link! But things don’t happen magically at the snap of a finger; it takes time, a long time!!

Time is everything, and we need to buy Michael time until we can find him affordable housing, so I need your help to help Michael get ahead of his rent, have enough money for his basic needs, and I can’t do it alone! So I ask my FB friends to help donate money. The goal of this charity is to raise at least $2500. Any amount is greatly appreciated! Your kindness and compassion will be repaid to you one day, as good deeds never go unnoticed. Helping people is my purpose in life, whether I do it as a Registered Nurse, or a human being—the purpose doesn’t change!
