Masui's Fight Against Stage4 Cancer

August 7, 2018 update: Thank you all for your support of Masui, Etta, and their children during the trying times of the last couple of months. Masui was blown away by your support when we launched the Go Fund Me campaign in June. With your support and generosity, he was able to start alternative cancer treatment in Tijuana just a few days after the launch of the campaign. It meant a lot to him to receive love and support during his time of need. After he passed on July 3, with your donations we were able to fulfill his wish to have a day of celebration as part of his funeral. We held the day of celebration of Masui's life on Sunday, July 15 and over 400 people attended! Friends and family paid their last respects to Masui and a shared wonderful stories about him. It was a beautiful celebration of his life. Masui was laid to rest on Monday, July 16 at Westminster Memorial Park. Afterwards guests were invited to lunch at a Asian buffet that Masui had chosen in advance. Masui loved eating at Asian buffets. We were happy to have friends and family join us and pay tribute to one of Masui's wordly and culinary joys. Thanks to everyone who helped out before, during, and after the funeral activities. Thank you to everyone who attended and thank you to everyone who couldn't attend but sent us their messages and love from afar.
After the funeral, Etta used the balance of your donations to prepare the household to be better organized and most importantly, to put down a down payment on a gently used 12-passenger van! Masui and Etta dreamt for years of getting a 12-passenger van that could fit their entire family of 12. They always coordinated driving and split the kids into two cars. After Masui's passing it was especially crucial for Etta to have a vehicle that could fit her entire family. Etta and kids were blessed to find a perfect van for them. The kids love their new big van! The kids started school yesterday and Etta was able to drive all nine of them to school in one trip. This blessing would not have been possible without your support and generosity. Thank you.
These last few weeks have been a whirlwind for the family as they prepared the household and prepared for the start of a new school year. At home the kids have been taking on more responsibilities to help out. They are doing their own laundry, splitting kitchen cleaning duties, and more. They're putting out their clothes for the school week on Sundays, so that weekday mornings will be easier to manage. They're also returning to their daily routines bit by bit. Masui was a great beach volleyball player and recently two of his daughters played in a beach tournament. It was a fun day at the beach for the family. The family is doing as well as can be expected and cherish the memories of their father and husband.

California Pizza Kitchen fundraiser: There will be a fundraiser for Masui's wife, Etta, and their ten kids on Wednesday, August 8, 2018, sponsored by California Pizza Kitchen and Goodwill Industries. These were companies that Masui worked for or with. Twenty percent of the bill will be donated to Etta and children. Four California Pizza Kitchens are participating: (1) Brea Mall in Brea, California (2) Main Place Mall in Santa Ana, California (3) Ala Moana Center in Honolulu, Hawaii and (4) Kahala Mall in Honolulu, Hawaii. The fundraiser is all day and includes dining, take-out, catering and beverages. Please be sure to mention that you are supporting the Masui Allen Tribute fundraiser. Etta and family will be at the California Pizza Kitchen at the Brea mall at 5pm. If you are there be sure to stop by and say hi!

Yesterday our beautiful and brave brother went to heaven. Masui passed away on Tuesday, July 3rd due to cancer-related complications. Thanks to all of your generosity Masui was able to begin alternative cancer therapy in Tijuana last week for two days. After the second day of treatment his ongoing issue with internal bleeding needed to be addressed, so he went to a hospital in San Diego. They kept him for a few days because of other cancer-related complications. Ultimately, he passed away on Tuesday from these complications. He was a fighter from the time he was diagnosed until his last breath. He and his wife Etta never gave up. His will was incredibly strong! He endured so much - procedures, treatments, appointments, transfusions, ER visits - day in and day out despite the physical toll on his body. Etta was by his side 24/7. Literally by his side, in a chair 24 hours a day - tending to him, talking to doctors with him, making decisions with him, assisting him move when he was weak. I witnessed two people who loved each other so much, and during the trying times that love soared. Thank you to all of you who supported Masui and Etta, helping them pursue the path of alternative treatment when no other traditional methods of cancer treatment were possible anymore. Being able to continue the fight against his cancer truly gave Masui and Etta hope and comfort these last few days. I can't express enough how meaningful it was to be given a chance to not give up. The opportunity to continue with alternative treatment meant so much to them! I've never witnessed two souls who fought so hard together. And I can't express how meaningful it was for Masui and Etta to see how loved and supported they were every day. Each day as the messages and donations were flowing in it showed them the love of friends, family, friends of friends, and strangers. It made them feel enveloped in love, especially during their most trying times. Thank you to everyone for showing them grace, kindness and love when they needed it most.
The GoFundMe campaign was created to pay for Masui's alternative treatments. He received two days of treatment in Tijuana, Mexico before he had to be admitted to the hospital in San Diego, California. Now the balance of the raised funds will be used to pay for Masui's funeral arrangements. The $22,000 goal will cover these costs. Masui was a brave man. Weeks ago asked me, his sister-in-law, to find suitable cemeteries. Even when facing a terminal illness he was looking out for my sister Etta. He wanted the search process to be easier on her if the time came to choose a cemetery. After visiting cemeteries a few weeks ago, I found a few suitable ones and I found that $22,000 would roughly be the cost. Your generosity has made this burden a lot lighter.
I am still keeping the campaign active because the raised funds are needed to help pay for the funeral costs and as well as to help Etta and her family of ten beautiful children. Thank you so much for all of your love and support.

My brother-in-law Masui Allen is a father of ten children and was diagnosed with testicular cancer in December 2016. After having surgery to remove the cancerous mass the doctors found that it had spread to his lungs. Over the last year and a half Masui has undergone multiple rounds of chemo and two unsuccessful rounds of bone marrow extraction. Despite the cancer treatments that he has received, he still has cancer. Two weeks ago his doctors told him that his cancer is not responding to chemo and that there is nothing more that they can do. Masui and his family are devastated. Masui has been spending his days at home with his family, his wife and ten children, making the most of his time with his loved ones and friends.
With nothing left to lose, Masui seeks alternative treatment of his cancer. He wants to enroll in an alternative treatment center that provides alternative therapy to treat cancer. Masui, Etta, and the rest of our family are visiting and researching treatment centers over the next few days to find a center with good outcomes. There is no guarantee of success, but Masui and his wife want to know that they've tried everything they could, and owe it to their children to try everything they can.
His doctors tell him that there's nothing more they can do. His current state of health is fragile. Masui is realistic and understands that he may not have much time left. He's prepared himself and has prepared his family and children. It is a tough time for his family. However, he has not given up. He wants to continue to fight and give it his best shot with the alternative cancer treatment program. He wants to survive for his family. His family is 100% behind him and appreciate your generosity and love. Prayers are also very much appreciated.
In our preliminary calls to the alternative treatments centers we have learned that the treatment program will be three weeks in length and about $22,000 for the three-week program. We are raising money to cover the cost of the treatment program. Any extra funds raised will help Masui and Etta cover other expenses. Masui has not been able to work since he was diagnosed in December 2016, due to his ongoing cancer treatments and recovery from the treatments. About a year ago, six months after Masui was diagnosed, Etta took an extended leave from work in order to care for Masui throughout his cancer treatments. She has been 100% devoted to his care since he was diagnosed, even shaving off her hair in solidarity with Masui when he first began chemo.
Over the next couple of days we will be visiting the alternative treatment centers to learn more about their programs, and then choose the best one for Masui. Our goal is to have him enroll as soon as possible, in the next few days. Given the state of his cancer and his fragile state of health, we have no time to waste.
Masui and Etta are blessed with ten children. Their oldest, Tainea, just finished her freshman year of high school. Their youngest child, Tyten, is one-and-a-half years old. Masui was a great volleyball player when he was younger and he has shared his love of volleyball with his children, who have become talented volleyball players. Etta and Masui are a great team. The secret sauce to their success raising a family is their commitment to share all of the responsibilities 50/50. They are a model of teamwork. Masui has a beautiful family and they need him to be in their lives for many years to come. He is 47 years old. We pray and hope for a way to successfully treat his cancer.
Masui and Etta met in 1999 and have been together for 19 years. They started their careers working for Goodwill Industries in 2001, had their first daughter in 2003, and had four more daughters and five more sons since. They are dedicated parents and they have big hearts. Throughout their career working for Goodwill Industries they've worked hand-in-hand with adults with developmental disabilities, helping these individuals live fulfilling lives.
Masui is a wonderful father, husband, friend. He makes instant friends because of his sense of humor and kind soul. He grew up in Hawaii and is an island boy at heart. In between changing diapers and chaffeuring his kids around, you would sometimes find him singing his favorite reggae songs or spontaneously picking up a ukelele and singing island songs. Everyone who knows Masui knows what a jovial and kind spirit he is.
