Help For Julie's Emergency Vet Costs
Donation protected
Julie, Caila, and I were coming home from a weekend camping trip and decided to stay at a hotel in Midland, TX. We got to the hotel, dropped off our stuff, and I took Julie outside to go potty. Out of nowhere she jumped off of her paw and wouldn't walk on it. I assumed she stepped on something sharp like a piece of glass or a burr, so I went over to help her. It was somewhere around 10:00 pm, so it was dark and I couldn't see, but when I got closer I noticed something caked on her paw. We were both alarmed, I had no idea what it was but I grabbed her paw and some dark, gooey, pudding-like substance came off onto my hand. I smelled the substance on my hand and it had a strong chemical smell. That's when I knew I had to rush her inside immediately to wash this stuff off.
Before I could get her inside, she instinctively licked her paw to get it off. I continued to get her inside, once I got her inside the lobby I noticed the substance was green and I yelled for help but no one answered. I noticed a maintenance cart and grabbed a roll of paper towels to wipe off as much as I could. Then I brought her up to our room and told Caila about the incident. I showed her the paper towel and asked her if she knew what it was. She smelled the paper towel and identified it as antifreeze. We immediately put her in the bathtub to wash it off. After the bath we started researching the situation, but noticed she was still licking her paw. She still had green on her fur, so we put her in the bathtub again. After that we called the emergency vet for advice. They told us to call Animal Poison Control, and we debated the idea because a call to poison control costs $75. I am a college student and Caila is a recent graduate, so $75 for a 10 minute conversation is a lot of money for us. We ultimately made the decision to call, and Poison Control told us to get her to the vet immediately. We rushed her to the vet and they took her directly back and gave her IV fluids. After a few hours of waiting, the vet informed us that her bloodwork tested positive for ethylene glycol- the chemical compound found in antifreeze.

Antifreeze is extremely toxic to animals and humans. Antifreeze exposure leads to kidney failure, coma, and death. They are keeping her at the emergency vet for 24-48 hours, and we will need to stay here in Midland until she is released. We are both missing work for this, and we are both on unpaid leave.
The cost of her care is going to be $3,000 on the low end and $5,500 on the high end. This is a cost that we simply cannot afford on our own. We are asking for any donations, seriously any little bit helps. If you know Caila and I, you know that Julie is our daughter. We rescued her after being abandoned and have worked so hard to rehabilitate her. This is a life or death situation for Julie. We just want to bring our little girl home. Thank you so much.
