As with many, it has been a tough year (s) for us. I was layed off in March 2020, back to work at new job in September only to find out I needed emergency surgery which included a hip graft immediately for an unhealed break in my collar bone (plate screws loose 1 of 2 breaks unhealed)
, surgery was Nov 4, expected to miss monthes of work AGAIN, and on Nov 8, four days after my surgery, my husband John attempted suicide with a rifle, this occurred in front of me as I was trying to fight the gun away
from him. Amazingly he survived, daughter and I slept in the vehicle at hospital parkaid to be close while they operated over 12 hrs to save him, we couldn't see him until his covid test was negative; he still wasnt in the clear and was in medicated coma for a few days from which he developed blood clots in leg and lung also on life support and we were in hospital a month afterwards during which, a major surgery already , some small ones in between and then once I was trained up able to come home (he wanted to be home to rest )until another huge over 12 surgery coming up mid February with hospital stay of minimum 5 days afterwards.
My injuries were unfelt from that Nov 8th on as I was in shock and in hospital with him 24 7 helping and learning his care.
They say I have 2nd year training now,lol and asked if I would be interested in nursing, I just wanted to help my husband. He required needles, blood, facewound packing, trache care, is tube peg fed (cannot eat) and was not fully mobile in hospital, required assistance for everything. The first weeks he couldn't even talk or walk.
At home I am in charge of his full care and he is improving but long road ahead of us. Had a few scares at home lung infections and stopped breathing 2 x , thankfully I had training and the suction machine to clear his airways and get him breathing again. So scary.
We were behind already before all this and have discovered many new expenses now due to this event such as ambulance bill(for me after the incident) professional clean up of our home (required due to me being bedside icu and the matter)replacing thrown out items from cleaners(bed thrown out, pillows, covers, blankets, clothes, entire carpet removed in bedroom ,holes cut out of ceiling ,& carpet leading from bedroom to door has holes cut out everywhere).
His doctors are in Calgary and we ve done many trips to and from, and then needed tires as ours were worn, battery replacement and found out has a draw in system, dishwasher broke(not to worried about that) medical equipment for home care and he will need full mouth teeth replacement once healed enough to do so, the doctor is putting in a recommendation for teeth funding , however they say its not always covered.
We have deffered any payments to all we can at this point and I hope to return to work as soon as he is healed enough for me to do so, for now I m needed here to help him, he will be off work to heal for sometime yet.
It was super hard to get the courage to ask for help, but also to put our "private" story out there, we know everyone is struggling somehow right now, however people have been asking to help so we decided we d put this out there and see what happens, if anything.
We hope our experience and sharing our journey can also promote suicide awareness, I never thought my husband would attempt, its true, its always those you least expect, but we can and will get through this...together. If you or someone you know, or even dont know are showing signs, ask, talk..you never know you may save a life.
We both have a long road ahead to heal emotionally, mentally and physically, this has been the hardest struggle of our life.He is my soul mate, I am so thankful hes still here with me and fighting hard to stay.Take care of one another, we all need some form of support at one point.
I ve composed this to a short version believe it or not and left alot of other details/info out, but think this summary could get our story out there. Thanks for reading.
