For the past 20 years, Joseph Ray Rose was a staple of the transportation department in many of the most successful films and television shows around including Parks & Rec, The Avengers, Tropic Thunder, and currently on Brooklyn 99 and Yellowstone. He was known for his kind demeanor and his bigger than life personality. Everyone on every set knows who Joe is, and he was always the biggest ray of light in any room he walks into. Joe passed away the morning of April 22nd after months of battling Acute Myeloid Leukemia and infection.
Joe had been working nonstop on the sets of Brooklyn 99 and Yellowstone during/after the pandemic. Sadly, tragedy struck this winter when Joe was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia while visiting family in South Dakota and was given a grim prognosis. He was going to need immediate care. Because the hospital that he was originally checked in to didn’t have the proper facilities to take care of him, Joe’s daughter Ashley, flew out to Sturgis on Christmas Day, picked him up, bringing him back home to Burbank. For the next 2 months (January and February) Joe underwent extensive chemotherapy which left him unable to work. At the time, he had planned to come back to set in April.
Joe's health took a very serious turn in March as he developed a very bad Gallbladder infection and, because of his weakened immune system from two back-to-back rounds of chemotherapy, he remained in the ICU in very serious condition for the last 5+ weeks. He was in and out of consciousness and the infections had caused liver and kidney failure. Joe was on 24 hour dialysis for the infection and multiple failures, on a ventilator via tracheotomy to assist with his breathing, and various blood pressure medications. Since this was a cascade of symptoms, the medical staff did their best to treat everything without putting too much stress Joe's already weakened condition.
Sadly, Joe passed away the morning of April 22nd. The last few weeks had been very hard emotionally on Joe, as he was just beginning to wake up and find his footing on his situation. Still at the end, he was in good spirits and making jokes. However, his body was weakened very much by the weeks and months of damage from the Leukemia, chemotherapy, and infections, and when things took a turn for the worse, it was too much for him. The Doctors at St. Joseph’s Providence in Burbank took wonderful care of him and have expressed their condolences and we thank them for their steadfast aid, especially in the face of this pandemic. In the best case scenario, Joe would have had a very long road of recovery including months and months of physical therapy, possibly surgeries, and around the clock care. In the months of his illness, medical bills and other expenses began to pile up, and Joe's ability to make income was completely halted, less than 4 years before he was planning to retire. This GoFundMe is made up to try and help with medical and funeral expenses as they begin to come in and will continually be updated.
Thank you to all those who have expressed their condolences and best wishes. This is an extremely hard time for the family right now, and anything that you can do to help is very much appreciated.
Sincerely,
Ashley Rose
