Help for Hero Arm so I don't have to hide anymore!

Hi! My name is Georgette and when I was 3 years old I contracted Meningococcal Septicaemia which is a deadly form of meningitis. I’m lucky to be alive, but the disease caused damage and doctors had to amputate my hand.

It didn’t just stop there. I ended up losing toes on both of my feet and spent most of my childhood in hospital having over 30 operations on my legs which were side effects of the meningitis.

I have a very loving and supportive family and friends who have played a part in helping me become the confident person that I am today. However, there’s one thing that is still holding me back and honestly, it is hiding my missing hand behind a cosmetic glove so that no one notices I don’t have a real hand. I wear it to hide. Other than that it has no benefit to me.

As you can see, even though it is designed to look like a real hand it does not match my skin tone or fit me properly.

I have only recently started to feel like I don’t want to hide anymore. I want to be me, limb difference and all. I think the Hero Arm is a symbol of that and I would wear it like a medal of honour. The Hero Arm is a lightweight, multi grip, 3D printed bionic arm made by a company called Open Bionics. It would not only fill me with pride to wear but would finally help me with those everyday tasks.

I’ve always secretly envied those people who eat with a knife and fork. It sounds silly doesn’t it? But the day that I can do this for myself will be a dream come true. Other bionic arms are far too expensive (some are £60k!!) so I’m really excited that there is finally a more affordable prosthetic out there that is more attainable with a bit of help and that is why I have put together this page.
