Help for Hassan

Hassan Bah, the father of Guinea’s ecotourism site Doucki in the Fouta Djallon highlands, and a great friend to many Peace Corps Volunteers, has fallen on hard times due to the worldwide COVID pandemic. Not surprisingly, his tourism business has all but dried up. Being the father of 8 kids with his wife Maimounà, he is seeking to diversify his work so he can make ends meet while waiting for the tourists to return.
Hassan will use the monies raised to support his family as well as to open a dry-goods store. Prior to the pandemic, Hassan’s dream was to use some of his profits from his tour guide services to improve the village pump. Hassan has not forgotten about this dream and still plans to invest in Doucki’s clean water source once he is back on his feet.
I worked with Hassan closely while I served as a Peace Corps Volunteer from 2001 through 2002. I was very lucky to live only about a 30-minute bike ride away from Doucki. He would stop by my house for a cup of Nescafe on market days, and I visited Doucki often for both work events (health education efforts that Hassan helped me set up) and R & R – who can ever get enough of the wondrous scenery there, such as the Grand Canyon of Guinea?
Since my Peace Corps service, Hassan and I have stayed in regular contact, and this is the first time in 20 years that he has asked me for anything but my friendship. I know that there are many people whose lives have also been touched by Hassan, and who, like me, would consider it an honor to help out the man who introduced them to a beautiful, hidden corner of the world with his huge spirit and warm hospitality.
Thanks in advance for considering to help Hassan during this tough time. If you know others who would like to help, please spread the word!
