Help for Hannah

What we need is at least $50,000 to purchase an accessible van with a lift and about $7,000 to keep the banks from foreclosing on their home $2500 for uncovered medical bills.

This is Hannah’s story:

Hannah was born August 2, 2002 in Hutchinson, Kansas and diagnosed at birth with Sturge-Weber Syndrome.  Sturge-Weber Syndrome (SWS) is is a neurological disorder most commonly characterized by an extremely large facial port-wine stain. SWS generally causes either right or left brain damage. In. Hannah’s case, she suffered damage to both sides of her brain. Other symptoms of SWS can include calcification over the brain, seizures, glaucoma, paralysis and in Hannahs case also caused a type of Cerebral Palsy that has left her right side very weak almost to the point of paralysis.

Hannah and her mother, Heather, moved to the Olathe, KS area shortly after Hannah was born to be closer to Heather’s mom, Mary Ann (Burgess) McMahill formerly of Lyons, KS. Hannah’s first five years were touch and go due to the severity of Hannah’s seizures, but she is a trooper and managed to survive those early years.

Hannah’s mother passed away June 14, 2017 leaving 15-year old Hannah in the care of her single, 60-year old grandmother, Mary Ann (Burgess) McMahill. Six weeks later on July 28, 2017, Mary Ann’s son Travis passed away leaving this overwhelmed mother and grandmother devastated. To say the very least, the next six months were troubling and heartbreaking for them as they learned to deal with their losses and this new way of life that had been forced on them both.

Mary Ann became the instant sole caregiver and financial supporter for Hannah. It took over 6 months to get Medicaid started so Mary used every penny she had to pay for the 8 nutritional supplements, numerous medications, diapers, clothing and personal care needs for her 15-year old granddaughter who is non-ambulatory and requires 24-hour supervision. Fortunately, Mary Ann was able to find some part-time, after school assistance at a cost of $400 per month.

Medicare is beginning to provide some help for Hannah in the form of Physical, Occupational and Rehabilitation medicine, Orthopedics, Neurology and Ophthalmology. Soon, Medicare will provide a wheelchair, splints, doctor appointments and medications but they do not assist with in-home care.

During the months following the deaths of her daughter and son and as Mary Ann began caring full-time for Hannah and working full-time herself, she got behind on her house payments and the bank is threatening foreclosure.

Mary Ann won’t ask for help so I asked her if I could ask for herand she grudgingly agreed. If you can’t help financially, then maybe you know someone who can so please forward this link on to them. In fact, please forward this on to everyone you know because someone out there may know just what to do to assist. Say a prayer for Hannah and Mary, they need our spiritual help as well as our financial help.
