My mom is a positive and inspiring woman in many people's lives, especially for our family. Beneath her warm smile, she is dealing with intense chronic pain, especially in her hips. Her diagnosis, Arthrosis, also known as osteoarthritis is caused by continuous wear and tear of joints and cartilage. Unlike nocturnal, sporadic arthritis pain, arthrosis pain is often felt during the day and amplified during joint movements. Average daily activities have become increasingly difficult due to the pain despite treatment efforts. Her decreased mobility and increased pain has significantly affected her quality of life. This debilitating condition has made it necessary for her to rely on a walker and a wheelchair.
My mother needs a hip replacement to reduce her pain and regain mobility. In Guatemala, the health system is very expensive. The constitution says that healthcare should be accessible to everyone, but the reality is the opposite. Many of the public hospitals are understaffed and lack the resources needed to be able to provide complete healthcare. As a result, many secondary services are not available at public health posts and have been contracted out to private companies. Patients often have to rely on a private laboratory to get blood drawn or a private imaging company to receive an x-ray. Receiving appropriate healthcare is even more challenging without health insurance. Our family is facing these challenges.
In order for my mother to have her surgery, she needs the money to be able to pay for it. We have found a place that can provide the necessary surgery, care, and physical therapy, but cannot afford to pay the cost upfront. Paying in installments is unfortunately not an option. After much consideration, we have chosen to reach out to our community of friends and neighbors to ask for help in paying for my mother’s surgery. Thank you for taking the time to read this and also know that ANY contribution is helpful during this time. The hope is that the surgery will be scheduled for the second week of August. I will provide updates on the situation. If you have questions, please feel free to communicate with me.
On behalf of my mother and family, THANK YOU.
