Hi everyone, my name is Yamel Rivera and I am the cousin of Steven Garcia and niece of Esteban Garcia.

On March 13th, 2023 around 6 AM my cousin and tio were driving on the I-290 towards Aurora to their job. While on their drive, the car’s battery stopped working. They had no choice but to turn on their hazard lights and pull over to the shoulder of the highway and check the car out. As my uncle went to the trunk to find a flashlight, my cousin opened the hood and tried to figure out what the problem was. They weren’t standing outside for even 5 minutes when a car came speeding at them and crashed into the parked car. Both of them were standing outside of the vehicle.

The impact knocked them both out. Without knowing how much time passed, my uncle finally woke up and found his head bleeding, the car pushed forward from where they were and on top of the barrier that separated the lanes and my cousin no where to be found. After being scared and fearing the worst, he found my cousin lying unconscious on the opposite lane from where they were, his body had flew all the way that far from the impact, bleeding from his head, his eye, and cuts all over his body. By the grace of God, he was still alive.

My family and I feel extremely lucky that both of our family members are alive after such a traumatic experience. However, they both still have a long recovery ahead of them, especially my cousin. Following the crash, my cousin had to spend over 3 days in the ICU and close to a week hospitalized. He suffered from internal bleeding in his head, his right eye was bleeding for 3 days, his cheekbones were fractured, and his shoulder was dislocated. After experiencing so much pain trying to walk, the doctors discovered he tore 4 ligaments in his knee and will be needing surgery. He also has to wear a neck brace for 5-6 months. Although he is home, he has been told his recovery will take a minimum of a year in which he will have to endure at home doctor visits and physical therapy 4 times a week.

Our family is extremely grateful that my tio and cousin are alive. However, we know that they have a long recovery ahead filled with hardships and financial burdens as my uncle and cousin had to miss work and my cousin will not be able to work until further notice. No tuvieron más remedio que encender las luces de emergencia, detenerse en el arcén de la carretera y revisar el auto. Cuando mi tío fue al maletero a buscar una linterna, mi primo abrió el capó y trató de averiguar cuál era el problema. No estaban parados afuera ni por 5 minutos cuando un automóvil se acercó a toda velocidad y se estrelló contra el automóvil estacionado. Ambos estaban parados fuera del vehículo.

El impacto los dejó inconscientes a ambos. Sin saber cuanto tiempo paso, mi tio por fin desperto y se encontro con la cabeza sangrando, el carro empujado hacia adelante de donde estaban y encima de la barrera que separaba los carriles y mi primo no se encontraba. Después de estar asustado y temer lo peor, encontró a mi primo tirado inconsciente en el carril contrario al que estaban, su cuerpo había volado todo el camino lejos del impacto, sangrando por la cabeza, el ojo y cortes en todo el cuerpo. . Por la gracia de Dios, todavía estaba vivo.

Mi familia y yo nos sentimos extremadamente afortunados de que ambos miembros de nuestra familia estén vivos después de una experiencia tan traumática. Sin embargo, ambos aún tienen una larga recuperación por delante, especialmente mi primo Después del accidente, mi primo tuvo que pasar más de 3 días en la UCI y cerca de una semana hospitalizada. Sufrió una hemorragia interna en la cabeza, le sangró el ojo derecho durante 3 días, se le fracturaron los pómulos y se le dislocó el hombro. Después de experimentar tanto dolor al tratar de caminar, los médicos descubrieron que se desgarró 4 ligamentos en la rodilla y necesitará cirugía. También tiene que usar un collarín durante 5-6 meses. Aunque está en casa, le han dicho que su recuperación tomará un mínimo de un año en el que tendrá que soportar visitas médicas a domicilio y fisioterapia 4 veces por semana.

Nuestra familia está extremadamente agradecida de que mi tío y mi primo estén vivos. Sin embargo, sabemos que tienen una larga recuperación por delante llena de dificultades y cargas financieras ya que mi tío y mi primo tuvieron que faltar al trabajo y mi primo no podrá trabajar hasta nuevo aviso.
