Help for Freya’s Surprise Six Pups!
Donation protected
Freya came to us as a chubby, almost-one-year-old puppy. I fell for her happy, sweet, calm nature as I got to know her at a doggy daycare I worked at briefly in Sept 2023 and was excited when I found out she was a rescue looking for a home.
Glen, the man who rescued her, divides his time between Winnipeg and Baker Lake, Nunavut. Freya was to be killed as part of a cull but the person with that terrible job took pity on her and Glen brought her south. He took her to two vets who examined her and said she wasn’t pregnant but when Jason and I took her to our vet (East St. Paul Animal Hospital) for her pre-spay appointment… SURPRISE!
Glen offered to take her back but as an independent rescuer he simply doesn’t have the funds/space to give her the attention she needs. Luckily we opted to keep her as she needed hands-on care through a difficult birth (two calls to the emergency vet) and continues to struggle with bacterial infections, worms, and a UTI, necessitating several overnight bathroom breaks and medications safe for nursing dogs.
Amazingly, even with all of it, she’s feeding her babies as best she can and they are steadily growing. Born overnight between October 1 and 2, they are four golden retriever mixes (we think, or maybe yellow labs) named Chunk, Billy, Thelma and Louise) and two little black and white charmers of an unknown breed named Bonnie and Clyde.
We have contacted a few rescues to see about partnering with them in an arrangement where we continue to foster the pups and they provide funds and manage new parent applications but all of the rescues thus far are full up and not accepting new litters. Lots of dogs in need in the world these days!
So, we’re appealing for funds for the rising costs of helping these new pups navigate to their new homes… puppy formula and food, deworming, vaccinations, puppy pads, Freya’s extra puppy food while she’s nursing, and some of the cost of the time we’re needing to put in for this unexpected project. Any remaining funds after the puppies are rehomed will go to the Manitoba Animal Alliance.
Any assistance you can give is so appreciated even if it’s just to share the news of these gorgeous puppies with potential new parents (contact me at [email redacted] for applications or to come visit). To see lots of pictures and updates, follow me on Facebook.
Thank you so much!
