My name is Melissa Chadha and I have a long story t2019o tell and if you make to the end I am ever so grateful that you even took the time and I hope that you and your family stay safe and healthy through these unbearable times.
My family and I planned a trip to India in September 2019 so that our son could meet his grandparents in India. We took a long time planning our journey over to India. Once December came we became aware of the Covid 19 that is now our holy terror in our lives. At this point in time it was not a massive concern. Over the course of the months Covid 19 began to spread but still did not spread massively through the countries aside from China and Italy.
We discussed what to do and we decided to take the travel over since the only countries that were at the time massively impacted where China and Italy and no other countries took any steps showing us that we are to expect what was happening now.
We thought we had a couple of weeks and we would get back without a hitch since numbers were still low.
Once we made it to India about 2 to 3 days later numbers for Covid-19 soared and the numbers just kept getting bigger by the minute let alone days.
Justin Trudeau asked us to come home now.
We got on the phone with Expedia to get another flight home as soon as possible. No matter the date we gave them they told us that there were no flights available.
The Indian government then put us on the 24 hour lock down on Sunday 22nd. Once the 22nd came out of no where they told us that they are now extending to March 31st.
Our March 27th flight cancelled.
We tried calling Expedia over 30 times to get on another flight. Once we got through they only told us that we would have to call Air Canada.
We then for days tried calling Air Canada, my husbands phone (all calls were not working on the phones here in India we had to open our phones and use roaming) would hang up right at 60 mins while being on hold with Air Canada, this was very frustrating since the hold time was over 2 hours but every 60 mins it would hang up. Some times when we called they would say to many people waiting for someone and would not even connect us. but hanging up at 60 mins was just to odd.
We did some research and it turns out that you phone provider can actually put a restriction on roaming calls. So we called our provider forr them to tell us that its Air Canada hanging up our calls (This was on day 3 of us trying)
I caved. I called my mom to have her call Air Canada for me and she got through after 2 and a half hours. They told us there was a flight on March 25th at 12:05 am. I said we will take this flight but then I looked at the time. It was March 24 at it was 830, we did not have enough time to get to the airport. its 7 hours away.
Why was this not an option? when we tried to get home earlier.
This was the last direct flight out of Delhi.
They then announced out of no where with no time to scramble to get out.
21 day lock down.
I now have 2 and a half tubs of food for my son and I am about to break down. We can not stay that long here. We need to get home.
This became a nightmare for us.
So I went on CTV and pleaded we get help to get out of here.
The government then set up 6 flights leaving Delhi this coming weekend. I am so excited to get home
This flight is the same flight we have booked for April 15th. Delhi to London and then London to Toronto.
We have to pay up to 2900 PER PERSON. There are 3 of us. We do not have 6000 dollars. I asked Air Canada (the wait is now 20 mins) if I can transfer my same flight from April 15th to this weekend for the emergency flights. Answer was no that we have to work with the agency that will call us and that our tickets with them will have nothing to do with the emergency flights.
We are now forced to apply for a $5000 loan through the government and pay more money from our pockets to even get the 3 tickets to get home.
This will sink us.
I am on Mat leave and my husband needs to get home so he can continue to work from home.
The power goes out here frequently and the internet is unstable, this makes it hard to work from here.
I know this is a hard time for everyone and I am thankful if you are able to help my family out during this time.
but most importantly please be safe, stay home and keep your distance.
I love you all and make sure your health is number one.
