On 4/17, David was hit by an under-insured driver while riding his motorcycle. The driver was impatient and tried to quickly make a left turn in front of passing traffic, claiming he 'didn't see' the motorcycle that was legally passing through the intersection. He struck David, spinning him 180 degrees and launching him onto the sidewalk with the bike landing on top of him.
For the next 6 days, David went back and forth from surgery to ICU in Stamford Hospital. He is suffering from a compound fracture to his tibia (requiring a titanium rod), broken foot, broken and dislocated toes on his left leg. He had to have four fasciotomies in his leg/foot to relieve pressure and save his leg, which is the most torturous procedure I've ever seen.
He also has a skull fracture, multiple brain bleeds, short term memory loss and multiple lacerations/abrasions requiring stitches...we've lost count of the number. Just when we thought he was on the mend, he had a seizure from the trauma that brought him right back to the ICU.
David was finally released from the hospital this week, but is in constant pain that the medicine isn't touching - it's an understatement to say we have a long road ahead.
We've had so many requests to help from the railroad family that we put this page together. The process is overwhelming and we anticipate David will be out of work as long as a year...in addition to the burden that's going to fall on him from the lack of insurance coverage and minimal assets the driver had.
I'm learning quickly the truth that railroaders take care of each other and I am humbled by the support and calls and visits we've gotten from his railroad family already. This is all new to me...I've always known David to be an introverted person and to witness so many people reaching out to him from the railroad is incredible. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
